Re The Land Train - Correct me if I'm wrong but due to opposition from taxi firms the Land Train is NOT allowed to set down or pick up passengers en route. Basically, its a mini-tour of Carvoeiro starting and finishing in The Square with no stops on route.

I have always thought clube atlantico to be overated and a little bit out on a limb somewhat with not a lot on offer on site. But every one is looking for different things I suppose. There are better resorts in the area.

Re vale do milho, it is too far to walk into the main town, as there is a lot of traffic on this road so it could be slightly dangerous, also quite steep in places. Don't be put off the vale do milho complex is very nice and within walking distance of a couple of decent restaurants, the land train from Rocha Brava doesn't always run to a time table.

Thanks for your comments about the Almansor. I think you're right - hotel is probably much nicer than Carvoeiro Sol, but the Sol wins every time for location!

Also - have reserved a couple of private villas on the vale do milho complex ~ how far is it from the main town and is it walkable one way (and taxi back)? And how often does the landtrain run from the Rocha Brava complex?

Agree with the last message on this, cracking hotel during the summer but quiet locally. Carvoeiro Sol for Feb is 21 euros per person per night and 10 euros for sea veiw plus your in the centre. There's a link on this site if you havn't seen it under Hotels. Hope this helps

Almansor is now part of Tivoli Group and a higher standard than Carvoeiro Sol which is part of a small private hotel Group. Carvoeiro Sol wins hands down on location though. As you say the Almansor is a bit of a hike and not many facilities around there. As the hotel is really just to sleep I would go for Carvoeiro Sol

Can anyone tell me their opinion of the Almansor Hotel please?

In particular I'd like to know if there are any restaurants/shops in that area and is it very hilly? I know the walk to the village will involve a steep road back. Once you get to the top of the road from the village, near Algar Seco, is it very far form there and is that mostly on a level?

Thinking of staying in February as the prices are pretty good. Have stayed in the Carvoeiro Sol before, which is best?

But here I have a question - do you know ? Do you know where (and if) I could hire a 2-3 bedroom villa just for New Year ? The thing is that we live very close, but we live with parents-in-law (Portuguese) and they simply don't celebrate it nor they appreciate our traditions. We don't smoke, and almost don't drink. The cheapest and the most helpful car hire company with 600 cars without any shadow of doubt is ZitAuto. The do not have a desk at the airport but do not want one as this is one of the reasons they are so cheap. They have people who meet you as you arrive and take you over to car park D. The paperwork is over in minutes. Been using them for five years and have absolutely no complaints. They are based in Quarteira. A Punto 5 door for August 2003 is 125 euros per week. Rates include free mileage, additional drivers and insurance to Spain. Excess insurance applies and you have the option of taking extra insurance of 30 euros per week for this.

and if you dont report every scratch/chip however small on returning the car you will be charged!This was my experience and for a small chip on the headlight which was there when I collected the carI was charged the equiv of £50.Be warned!Even minute damage should be reported before taking the car out

Yes, I have to agree that Auto Jardim are excellent for car hire. Have used them three years running with no complaints whatsoever. Cars in super condition, and they are very punctual in their delivery and pick up. Highly recommended.

Re Car Hire We always use 'Auto Jardim' and always found them to be excellent. Last June we managed to puncture a tyre just after leaving their car park at Faro airport, Auto Jardim replaced the wheel and tyre without charge. Vehicles are very low mileage and in immaculate condition. However, I cannot comment as to how their prices compare with their competitors but I have no hesitation in recommending them.(They have an office in the centre of Carvoeiro).

P.S. Best Wishes to all in Carvoeiro from a very wet and windy Pembrokeshire - roll on summer!!

Re car hire, not the best and over priced even with "so called" discounts. Will update tomorow on the best deals, but it's worth hanging on until at least 5 weeks before you go. But Holiday Autos is a NO!
