Hotels? Hang on! Lets get the geography right

In the sqaure is the carvoeiro Sol (ex Dom Sancho. The Mirachoro is 300 mts up the hill on the left going out of town TOWARDS the Aalmansor. Next comes Palm Gardens and the Hotel Cristal

Just back in damp, chilly Buckinghamshire after 3 weeks at Rocha Brava. At least the rain there was warm, and we also had several sunbathing days in the garden. To the person asking about the Almansor, yes, it is still there (try Tivoli Almansor). The Mirachoro is a new hotel further up the hill. Great restaurants, Carlos at the Captain's Table, Marinha Brasserie, and O Velha Casa do Pescador, all at Benagil. The Mona Lisa and Casa Algarvia are also very good. Good pizzas and pasta at La Bella Napoli (by Rocha Brava) and California in Carvoeiro. Have already booked next visit for January, hope the weather has improved by then. At least the golf courses shouldn't be so soggy underfoot. Can't wait!

Is The Almansor Hotel no more?

There's a new one (or it seems new!)called Mirachoro Hotel up the road from square - has that replaced The Almansor or am I totally wrong?!

Stayed in the Carvoeiro Sol for the first time this month. Location brilliant, really cheap room rates and very good breakfast (inc)which also did for rolls at lunchtime!

I've also booked those cheap bmibaby flights in February for a week - silly not to!!

Lanterna Velha is shutting this weekend (end Nov) for two months. Open again Feb.

The sardine man "on the beach" can only have been Jorge and Julio at Os Tres Jotas surely?

I have lived here since 1981 and can't recall anyone on the beach

Just got back from Carvoeiro on Wednesday, used BMI baby EastMidlands service for the first time, SUPERB ! I was impressed with East Midlands Airport and thought the Airpark car park was in a superb location, just 2 minutes from the airport. Just to let people know we visited the Safari Bar in Carvoeiro which is under new management, we were really impressed with the service by the new manager Stuart Greenwood, the music is all 60's 70's and some 80's, super atmosphere for all ages. The manager is a life size imformation guide to the area, knows all the best beaches, restaurants etc ! Try it, you will like it! ate at Happy's, Old Antonio's, O' Xandrez, and the Chinese on the right down the main street, all were excellent. Visited Crazy world with our 5 year old daughter, seemed a little run down and some of the animals were in a poor state, won't rush back there next year!

5 hour delay, inbound aircraft diverted Lisbon, mal tempo as they say in these parts, only one decent day on week ended 27th for me,take a good raincoat,of couse it was worse in Morocco according to RTP,but I enjoyed the week and think the folling are worth a mention for value/quality/quantity of food.....Taberna do Mare....old fisherman quarter Portimao, A Guitarra....Parchal,and O Cherneco....beside the chuch in Estombar...the bill for 2 with wine, dessert, coffee and such offerings as cataplana, espetadas, tamboril etc came to resp.32 ,24,20(no sweet@Charneco)and a great atmosphere in all 3,espec Mare with its dockside characters sitting at the same table, adega style ,all very friendly and not a McHappy meal in site.I loved the house wine in Mare from Pias(Alentejo)and the Baba Caramelo of Guitarra.Lets read of some more nice experiences in this column

Can someone please tell me if Colombos restaurant or the Lanterna Velha on Restaurant Hill will be open on New Years eve? I have just had my first visit to Carvoeiro and I would recommend going there to anybody. Ok so the weather wasn't brilliant when I was over there last week but what do you expect for November. I must be honest and say that I actually feel in love with the place and I can't wait to get back there, but unfortunately in won't be until next September.

Maybe the locals should get in touch with whoever flouts the law re. building increases. I met with an estate agent in the summer who said that the rules are bent all the time. ie. can't build high so they build down the cliffs etc. Of course it is sad that building is increasing so much but if it is stopped, what happens - less jobs for one thing.

I'll tell you what's going pear-shaped and what all you ex-pats should be up in arms about and that is the obscene increase of villas on the road to Ferragudo and the expansion of Ferragudo itslf near the Lighthouse. That's where Portugal is losing its identity. Burger bars come and go., overbuilding just increases. Get your priorities right.

McD's are not about cheap food, I'm talking about Quality, not the so-called chips and tough bits of grilled meat widely available in the village in a lot of cases served in grubby and tacky surroundings. I've had McD's at Algarve Shopping and I have to say the taste and quality + value was better than the UK, there was a certain Portuguese element that made it better. Also add a bit of piri-piri to the burger, heavenly!

Oh dear, this is all going pear shaped. First and foremost the economy of the area is reliant on tourists. Why someone would want to eat at Mcdonalds is beyond belief and all the profits go back to the US and not the local economy. So the local restaraunts and bars who all sell burgers, coke, chips and will knock up anything McDonalds do. So why would anyone with an ounce of common sense use the rasculs in the first place. Perhaps this is why McDonalds pulled out at the fire station site! At the end of the day whilst in Portugal, I will not buy, eat, or drink in any establishment that is non Portuguese. We are their guests and every one bar none should support them accordingly.

here we go again. someone always doesn't like someone else to have an opinion. Do not think its a case of being snobby - we can eat a good filling meal, with alcoholic drink and bill is cheaper than fast food places. Maybe it is the cheapest place to eat out in Hampstead but not all of us are rich enough to live there anyway!!

Don,t be so Snobby English! If iMcD's are good enough for Hampstead then it's good enough for Carvoeiro. At least it's French Fries are better than The McCains frozen ones served up in 90% of the villages "restaurants"(cafes more like). So get off your high horses and go to the Fish and Chip shop in the Village and taste the worst in exported English food!

If you have any space left, open a fitness studio and a morgue next to it. In ten years time they will generate good revenue.

Shop in Lagoa:

How about opening a "New Yorker" or a "C&A"? these are tow shops I would have liked in Algarve Shopping but they didnt open any.

Also a decent computer hard- and software store, Vobis and Worten should be bombed for their prices and awful selection as well as incompetent customer service (sorry about the flame!) Ever tried to buy something as simple as a hard drive or some RAM? All they have there are 25 different, overpriced sound- and video cards! Discount, ask for a discount and experience the pleasure of 7 or 8 incompetent staff members giggling and laughing in your face.

OK, enough with the flaming, I think you get the idea.

Agree with the comment before. There are some very good shops in Lagoa which are non tourist and sell good quality goods including shoes, the best shoes are in the clothes shops (bit like years ago)an extension to some of them into the village would be a big bonus and hopefully for the trader as well.

All their flights from Cardiff and East Midlands are £10 + £2.50 taxes (making it £25 return!)I think you have to book by the 26th and travel Jan/Feb/Mar

Also easyjet/go have reduced fares but not as cheap as bmi from those 2 airports.

Get booking! Roll on February 2003!!
