To the family wanting to visit in July 2003. I too can recommend Monte Dourado. It is in centre of village so beach,restaurants etc. are all to hand. We always stay there because of this - a lot of places are out of town and people have to use taxi's which cost money. There are pools for the children and all the staff are very helpful and friendly. Apartments usually have 2 bath/shower rooms and are very spacious and always kept clean by fantastic maids who come in every day. Wish we were there now!!!

For the person looking for accommodation for a family - how many people in the group and what ages?

We have an apartment on Monte Dourado, which is in the centre of the village and within walking distance of everything. It is a 3 bed apartment which sleeps 6 plus a cot. It is on 2 levels but we provide a stair gate. We advertise on this site - look at Apt 132 Monte Dourado under rentals.

The nearest beach to Rocha Brava is Centeanes which is within walking distance - about 20 minutes depending on where you are on the complex.

The beach is down a long way from the road - don't know if it is steps or a ramp because I have never been brave enough to try it.

Look under beaches on the left hand side.

As for accomodation for young family...

I would suggest staying anywhere that has all the accomodation on one floor. Villas with stairs can be a bit dangerous - especially as it's usually in marble which is hard if you fall!

Vilamirante I can thoroughly recommend. They have two apartments side by side and you have your own pool to share. When you come out of the apts there is a wall and gate so that children cannot run into the pool area. We actually prefer the one bedroom apt as it has a larger kitchen/living area. The bedroom is large and could sleep more, and you can sleep more on the bed settee.

You have to remember that when abroad it is not as "easy and safe" as at home, but you will love Carvoeiro and the portuguese love children.

Rocha Brava is a lovely development, there are several large pools plus a restaurant, cafe and shop.

The only drawback is that you really do need a car as it is a very long, uphill walk from Carvoeiro.

Maggie the best way to get accurate information with regards to the weather is to click on "WeatherStat" on the Carvoeiro home page. If you then scroll down just a little way you will see 'Weather Conditions in Faro'. It will give you the temperature in both F & C. If you look at it just now (9.00am Friday) you will see 11C! A bit chilly but by mid morning, from my experience, it is usually lovely and warm again. Make sure you take warm jackets etc for the evenings - bit like England in the early Autumn - lovely and warm during the day but once the sun has gone down it can be pretty cool!! A

You obviously hit that really bad week in September. My sister was there also but fortunately they were there the week before as well which was glorious. She said how awful it must have been for those like you that were only there that week.

Monica, There are some lovely places on the headland by village church. Land between road and cliff edge. Just be careful ! There are several allsupers in village and a very good Supermarket just outside the village called INTERMARCHE. has jus about everything. Have a lovely holiday.

I've got free flights from Cardiff with bmibaby - only have to pay £7.50 taxes each way - so £15 per person return. Don't know if the offer is still on though, but it might be worth ckecking them out as well. Of course it depends where you live as to whether Cardiff is any good for you!

Weather: I was in Portugal last November/December and the weather during the day was beautiful but it does get chilly in the evenings. Not cold but you'll definitely need a jacket or something! The only time I've ever experienced bad weather in the Algarve(I've visited during every single month of the year now over the past 20 years!) was April this year, it was dreadful, lots of rain, wind etc and to make matters worse I'd left beautiful sunshine behind in the UK!!! Generally speaking though the weather is usually glorious and far better than the UK! Enjoy your holiday, I'm SOOO envious, wish I was going!

If you own a car you can bring it over when you move down, provided you apply for residence you will be able to import it tax free as a part of the moving goods. All you need to pay is the licencing and numberplates.

This only works once and only for one car.

CAR RENTAL Take care folks I rented from AUTORENT via the net. They stung me for an extra €6 a day damage waiver excess which made there hire charges no cheaper that the reputable firms. The car a got was a wreck. Fortunately I spotted the craked windscrene 3 miles out of Faro so returned to get a note put on docs. (They would not give me an alternative car in spite of the fact that the radio, clock or cigare lighter did not work). Three weeks later returned car and they insisted the small mark on drivers side I had done and that the damage excess did not count as I had not reported it to the police. Strange thing is they did not look at any othe part of the car but went straight to the drivers door rubbed off the grime and pointed it out to me. I am convinced that this damage did not happen while the car was in my possession, never the less they would not return my deposite and charged me €100. BE WARNED....... AVOID AUTORENT

Re estate agents. We purchased via Vernons in the village (been around for years)Tel 00351 282 357109 and ask for Brian or Rod. They advised a solicitor in Lagoa (Idalio) and the whole thing went through within about two months. The solicitor set up an off shore company in Gibraltar mainly for inheritence tax reasons (the company does not die even if you do and passes to who evers in the will)The situation with off shore companies has now changed and I'm sure Vernons are up to speed on this.
