We bought our furniture in the shop in Silves. Can't remember it's name, but it is sited in several shops next to each other and if you want things for different rooms you get whizzed from one too another. They were very helpful, speak english, prompt delivery and like alot of portuguese shops it is much bigger than it looks. We also buy curtains here as time is limited. There are a few malls around in Faro and the big new one on the way to Albufeira. The shops are smaller, but have a good selection of household items. The big supermarkets (Modelo, Intermarche) have plenty of household items. Have fun! and don't forget some things are cheaper there - so do the reverse and buy things there to bring back with you.

Re Buying furniture, there is no need to consider bringing furniture to Portugal. There are many many stores offering excellent choices of furniture in the Algarve. You don't say where you are but we have fully furnished our property in the last year and found it pretty easy. I can recommend one store in Portimao which is on the roundabout near the elephant on the same road as the Modelo supermarket. As a starting point I think this will give you a good idea what is available. One of the girls there, Thelma looked after us and was excellent. She, like so many of the Portuguese speaks excellent English and we found the service and choice good. I also have a contact for having curtains made up and for the other bits and pieces to be done that although they might only be small jobs don't really justify a trip out ( although if you have just bought your place I suspect you will be looking for every possible excuse to visit! )There are more of these type of shops as you get towards Villamoura and the golf areas of Vale de lobo etc and these may be a little more expensive. It just depends on your budget. We did bring some things from the UK like curtains but only did so because we were'nt able to spend enough time there to choose ourselves. If you want further info put a message on the board with an e-mail address and i can give you as much info as you will probably want.We did bring a digibox with us that provides us with the sky programmes and found no problem here.

However, you would find most of the 18 hole courses difficult to play if you were not a regular "golfer". Vale do Milho is a 9 hole course and might be your best bet, but take plenty of balls as there is water about. DG

Hello. Me and the lads just had a great 2 weeks in Carvoeiro. The best scran can be found at Happys and Maximes. Some good bars, Mungo's is the place to watch football and meet the lovely Susan (hope your mush is better now), and Flic Flac is spot on, and the Jail House is always a laff. Check out the bloke who does the Karaoke - anyone hear him shreik "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"?!?! Best breakfasts are at Jokers, but it gets a bit hot inside. Hello to Luig and Louisa from Bar Mexicano, Alex and Lorna from Rascals and Liz and the crew from Flic Flac. The Bote is canny as well, foam night is not to be missed. To the bloke who's villa path we always used as a shortcut - sorry mate. For the more hardened drinkers get a taxi to Prais De Rocha for a night out, only costs 20 euros. And finally thanks to the lovely Stella for cleaning our villa and having to put up with our awful living conditions a la The Young Ones. See you again next year (if we are not barred).

Regarding tax numbers and tax payments - this will alos depend on whether or not your property is held in an offshore vehicle. If it is, and you do not disclose or letting revenue, your local community taxes will be higher than the privately owned properties. The Goverment will simply assume that there is taxable reveneue and apply a rather complex calculation based upon 1/15th of the rateable value (valor tributavel) plus the standard community charge. The laws are in the process of being changed - I believe they are due to be ratified by the new Government and will come in to force next tax year. Does anyone have any further news on the implementatioon date and whether or not it is now law.

This of course does not affect you obtaining a bank account but you will need to produce a copy of the your fiscal number.

Thanks Liz for all the info...really helpful. Re new property owners, I suggest you contact your management agent who should advise you. Basically you won't get a bank a/c until the authorities issue you with a "fiscal" number (similar to our NI number). They will then want to know about about any lettings and expenses and then give you a tax bill. It's not as bad as it seems. Your management agent "should" know of an accountant, so ask them, failing that come back to this site with an email address and I will put you in touch with ours (Lagoa based)Hope this helps and congratulations, where's the villa then?

Just back from two weeks in Carvoeiro and wanted to share some recommendations. It's a lovely place. Really enjoyed it. As for places to eat, try the excellent Primavera, O Castello (lovely view of the beach in Carvoeiro) and Wolfs in Monte Carvoeiro for more special dinners. Also try "Fernando's Stone Steak" also in Monte Carvoeiro, not Stonesteak, on the right as you go through main entrance. Was fun cooking your own food on hot stones..quite a novelty. The Catz Pyjamas is a good spot for pizza in the town going up the hill on left toward Almansor Hotel. Colombos (beside Smilers) serves nice food (lunch) and beer. As for places NOT to eat and there is only one I would mention - "A Galleria" on the main street down to the town opposite the California Pizza. A Galleria had Terrible food and terrible service. It's in a busy spot and they simply don't seem to care about the quality of the food they serve or how they serve it as they will unfortunately continue to get business from passers-by. Awful. Tia Ilda on the hill up to O Castello has nice food but far too many staff for the amount of people there when we went. Meant the meal took some time to arrive, but was good quality. Jailhouse is a good spot for live music and Hemingways is a nice bar. Bellisimo Cafe for a nice coffee. Visit Algar Seco in Carvoeiro and also try and hire a car to go visit Cape St. Vincent near Sagres and Lagos, a lovely town. Sives with the castle and the Monchique mountains are beautiful too. View from the highest point at Foia is great. Enjoy - Liz.

Yes, life has become expensive throughout the euro zone. I have seen some strage price politics and rounding off in the past few months so a little attention is needed when consuming your everyday products.

A meal consisting of a couvert, meat dish, salad, a big bottle of water, coffee and maybe desert should not cost you much more than 10-15 Euros per person (unless the meat is called chateaubriand and the restaurant "Le Ermitage" ;) )

Fish on the other hand is expensive, as they are catching less and smaller fish (at least that is the excuse you get from most restaurant owners). The prices for quality fresh fish should range around 40 to 45 euros per kilo.

Look out for the restaurants where the locals eat, generally a good sign that price and quality are in relation.

Just returned after another wonderful fortnight. Some Restaurants are better than others but have not had a bad meal in 2 holidays.Would reccomend.. Casa Do Pao , about 150 yards up the one way system from the square, then afterwards just across the road, retire to Cheers bar for the best Cocktails in town .

Chinatown has good food and is inexpensive. O Cantinho was nice but if you want an outside table you may have to book (i was there high season so this may not be the case now)

For Football fans smilers bar is ideal. They have 3 T V's in the bar and on a Saturday they are able to show a Live Premier League game which is on Portugeuse T V as well as the Sky Sports prog with the latest scores as they come in

Go and Bmi baby services from east mids are excellent! Although Bmi has the edge. They use British Midland planes on many ocasions, more leg room etc. Normally on time, staff excellent!

We returned from Carvoeiro on Thursday (our 3rd time and still just as good). To cheer myself up I read these messages but what amazes me is that no-one mentioned The Jail House. What a brilliant place for an evening's entertainment! Every year we go in and Dave and Karen are just like friends now. The music is brilliant (though the jokes are awful)and all the bar staff are friendly and what is really good is that they remember you from your last time in Carvoeiro.

Don't give up Dave and Karen or I would stop coming to Carvoeiro.

Story about whale complete with pictures was in the Correio da Manha, last Tuesday or Wednesday

The whale was taken to Portimao for "burial" at the council waste site with samples taken for Zoomarine and Lisbon Marine Institute.

Seen by a whole boat load of tourists. Can't recall name of boat
