In reply to the message left on the 19.8.99 which was a comment to my message about Rocha Brava. What a silly reply ,Rocha Brava was running for years very well without the coachloads, there were other people there at the same time as us who had also been going for a number of years ,they commented too on the change due to the large numbers coaches arriving,it lost some of the personal touch that was so good at Rocha Brava.

VISA cards are accepted in Carvoeiro. (I used mine to purchase some sports gear in town and there was no problem there.) There are also several cash point machines but they are prone to breaking down!

Hi, I stayed in a villa just East of the town a couple of years ago. I'd like to return next year but can't remember the name of the villa or area. The villa was directly opposite a restaurant called Rusticos. to get in to town took maybe five -ten minutes by car and the journey included a very tight hairpin bend by a beach. also remember a restaurant on the way in to town called Chicken George or something like that. Can anyone tell me the area I stayed in please?

You can change Travellers cheques at the Bank in Carvoeiro,(near to Praia do Carvoeiro) and also at either of the Currency exchanges. I am not sure of the charges as I only took hard cash with me. It is a good idea to get change down any large notes before you go as there seems to be a terminal shortage of coins in the Algarve at the moment. (Something to do with not minting any new coins because of the Euro arriving soon!)

Vale de Milho will set you back approx. 7000$00 ECS for a round of 18 Holes but this does include Clubs. (For Club selection you may need a 5 Iron but 7 iron, PW and Sand Wedge were enough as the holes are quite short but still challenging!)

No sorry the market only sells rotten fish and seafood!!! Only joking, yes there is a market that sells fresh seafood, but only until 1.00 p.m. Be careful what you buy, sometmes it is sold from one day to the next, and DON'T buy fish from Intermarche, it is always leftovers there, and more expensive. Try Silves market or Armação de Pêra, they have the traditional type, all outside on the pavement.

My family are visiting next week and our travel agent has advised us to take just currency as travellers cheques are very expensive to change in the banks and that there aren't many other places that will change them. Is this true, and are there any other places (hotels etc.) that will change travellers cheques?

Please reply to lsaunders@pjh.co.uk.

We got back from carveiro a couple of weeks ago, and could any english folks still there please pass on a few messages to various waiters for us?

Imprevisto bar: tell all the staff that the two Spice Girls miss them, and we'll be back next year!

Migel at the bar with a boat in it in the square: (he's the one that's training to be a police-man. phwoar.) tell him good luck with his police training, and we miss him! From the two english girls who were in his bar every night and saw him on the banana boat too!

Please write us a message if you manage to pass on this stuff. Thanks! (Oh, we're Bec and Pip by the way)

Don't forget that a lot of the people who write for the various magazines have their favourite restaurantes, or their friend own places, of course they will get a good write up. Personly I like the critics on the message board, I have been to several of the restaurantes that have been mentioned here and haven't been let down yet. Lets have more restaurante ratings here, lets hear it from the horses mouth!! By the way I the worst meal ever at the Rustic, service was dreadful, they forgot one meal then when it did arrive it was not cooked, then to top it all we were over charged. Then they wondered why we refused drinks on the house, by the way we were charged for the late undercooked meal!!!! Maybe it was a one off, but I definitly won't go there again, considering it was off season and they weren't that busy. This was the rustico near caramujeira, not sesmarias.

The CHEF is the restaurant, not the owners,it can change hands half a dozen times and it is not noticeable,if the CHEF stays the same.As for "La Romance being reccomended by the golf magazine as one of the top 10 restaurants,I get the impression then that they only tried 10 restaurants in the area. Its a joke sometimes when you read these magazines.Ask the local potuguese were they eat, certainly not "La Romance", after living here for 10 years I think we know better than the golf magazines.Sorry dont mean to offend anyone just stating facts.

I don't think you should avoid carvoeiro because of the accident rate. Most of the accidents are caused by people comming down from Lisbon, Porto, etc, all in a hurry to visit the algarve that they slag off the rest of the year! By the time you get here it should all be back to normal!!

Regarding the rating of La Romance (posted by someone): It was recently reviewed and rated by a Golf Magazine (the name slipped my mind) I read it while I was at The Leadbetter driving range (it was in English). They were in the TOP10 of restaurants in the Algarve, since it was the closest to us, we decided to give it a shot, and it was absolutely delicious. It is definatly worth the drive.

Went to the festival do marisco today, well worth the drive. It's 1600$00 to get in, but you get a nice mug, a plate of prawns and a drink. The prawns are delicious, we had giant prawns grilled with piri piri, buzios (sea snails??) and chicken ( I know it isn't marisco!!) It's really well organised and clean, with the added bonus of being along side the river, lovely views. Well worth a visit. Last day is Tuesday.

Weather forecast says Monday partly cloudy but after that it will go back to normal so people can watch the eclipse on Wednesday. Don´t forget the special specs. You can buy them at the Farmácia next to the town square.

Naturist (or STARK BOLLOCK NAKED to give it it's proper title) sunbathing used to be allowed at Marinha. I remember seeing a man who had a novel use for tin foil. Hmmmmm. Oh yeah and they used to get 'em off at that beach near the blow hole (??!! - I said Blow HOLE) that you could only get to by a dodgy ladder, near club carvoeiro. Regards Helpful voyeur xx

I recommend the restaurant at ALGAR SECO. Wonderfull seafood and really good drinks. (Especially the Prawn cocktail and the grilled tuna) It's a bit of a walk from Laranja Do Sol but not so bad from the Town Centre.

I saw jet skis for rent on marina beach, but it is 5000$00 for one person for an hour and 6000$00 for two, seems to be a rip off to me. You'd be better of swimming and using the money for a night out!!! Most beaches have pedal boats for rent, but it all seems so expensive. Going on a trip round the caves soon I'll let you know what it's like!

Are there any Jet Ski hire places at the beaches near Carvoeiro? and if so, approximately how much would they rent at? Thanks, Kev.

For top quality food Wolf´s in Palm Gardens is a must! The most happening bars in Carvoeiro: Jailhouse, LSD, Imprevisto. Crazy Games is a great place to play snooker. I have not tried our new Strip Club (hint, hint, nudge, nudge, wink) but I guess it is always worth a visit!

come in September, it's lovely! By then it has calmed down!!! We're not moaning (well, we are really!), just letting people know how we feel. Maybe some of the bar, rest., and agency owners are unaware of the problem and reading these messages can do something to make Carvoeiro a better place. Don't forget the "Festa" in August, last Sunday of the month, always worth a look

Hey everyone, this is not an area for non-stop moaning. How about advertising the positive aspects as you seem to be turning me off going and I'm not due to arrive until September.

Any positive aspects; food, bars, sight seeing, beaches?????????????????????????????????????????????

That is not much to ask but as might well know, every table on the "esplanada" brings in a lot more money in summer than a table inside the bar because the people like to sit at the open air and enjoy a drink or two. The safety of the pedestrians is not jeopardised as long as everyone driving in Carvoeiro is concious of the situation and keep their speed at a minimum. That however might be too much to ask...

I understand and fully acept that people are trying to make a living, and know that this is the time of year that will help us through the winter. Having owned a bar in Carvoeiro I know first hand! All I ask is that bar owners and restaurant owners and even travel agencies leave enough space for people walking, or with small children, or wheelchairs to be able to get past without having to walk in the road. There was a time when we didn't have pavements, now that we have they are filled with chairs and tables. It's not much to ask, is it?????

Regarding the blocked sidewalks...I guess I hear locals complaining about the lack of dignity that consists in walking on the roads and having to park their car up by the church on a daily basis. Nevertheless I seem to hear no complaints when it comes to the money flowing into Carvoeiro and undoubtedly into their pockets as well. So lets be a little less semitic about it. Carvoeiro has a space problem when it comes to parking cars or walking on the sidewalk, so here is my appeal to all the people driving in Carvoeiro: Please use the designated parking areas where possible and otherwise use your God-given common sense not to park the car in places which will inevitably result in traffic disorder (i.e. turning a two way street so narrow only one car can pass.

the amount of parked cars AND places like SMILERS and CARVOEIRO BAR who have their tables all over the pavement, make it impossible to walk on the pavement. Please take note and do something about it.
