Re: Travellers Cheques

Agreed, they are expensive to buy and when you cash them in you will get no where near the amount written on the cheque.

You are better off picking up cash locally with Visa/Master Card etc from the cashpoint or inside the bank for larger amounts (don´t forget your passport). Be aware that the Carvoeiro cashpoints are usually empty from Saturday night through to Monday morning.

Please can anyone help me contact O BAU D'AVO the pottery shop at the top of the one way system. I bought some of their lovely pottery in May and had it ship home using their postal service. I wouldn't recommend travellers cheques at all - last week some French people tried to cash 200 euros in travellers cheques and the bank wanted 13 euros commission!! It seems like a complete waste of time - bring some cash then use the cash machines (there are at least 4 in the village)

Been home from carvoeiro a week now and am really depressed, had some great meals in O Tasco, A Gale,and Jota Lita all very family friendly (especially) Jota Lita and excellent food, also had a couple of good nights in Sullys, just wish i was there now!!. Stayed at Vila Nova superb complex and very friendly people.

We were there last year on the 15th Sept as it so happens....sea was o.k.,but you were unable to stay in too long,half hour or so before the chill set in. We sunbathed for a while, then went back in. Average air temp for that week was about 26 degrees centigrade.Perfect without being TOO hot. Hope you enjoy your holiday.

Actually, have been taking portugese lessons for 9 months now-only tip I have for anyone is----don't try to translate whilst drunk, oh well(and I thought I'd done fairly well) at the time I had drunk sufficient alcohol to see two of everything including dictionary entries,my sincere apologies if I offended anyone with my efforts.Will not be trying again, and am dropping the lessons,the teacher is obviously failing!!! OffShore Tax: We have been informed that it will be introduced in the next tax year! Based on 1/15th of the Fiscall value (Rateable value) tax at 25%, if you do not submit accounts. Look on the rentals section on this website. I've booked late with several before - even for a few days when I've just wanted to take a long weekend or equivalent. Email a few and see what they come back with.

For cheap flights try Go-fly, freedomflights, flymonarch, dialaflight, expodo, lastminute.com etc to name just a few! It may be difficult to get really low cost flights as it's still peak season.

I usually book flights first as they can go quickly, and then see what's available for rental.Also teletext can have good offers if you're prepared to look. Search its website though - much faster than the TV!

We have just arrived home a week in Carvoeiro and had the best holiday ever.

Thanks to Pam at Carlton carleton@mail.telepac.pt and her husband Jim who organised the apartment for us who couldn't have been more helpful, I would recomend them to anyone looking to rent somewhere at short notice, we stayed at 99 Vale do Milho a very clean and tidy apartment with all mod cons with plenty of space for upto 6 people, Pam did us a great deal and we couldn't of wished for a nicer apartment or agent.

We visited some great places and would recomend driving slightly west of benegal to find the nicest beechs IMHO and a gale was our favorite eatery

I thought I'd try them this year to ensure a quick getaway. All my dealings on the web were excellent but once you arrive their agents Air Auto take over. When I had completed the paperwork I had to wait for another two parties to do likewise before they would take me to the car parked in Carpark 4. I had booked a Focus (or similar) but got a Golf, which is not so similar in boot space - one of the main considerations. Also I noticed there was no aerial and when I pointed this out was told with a laugh that none of the hire cars on the Algarve have aerials? The concept is that you prepay for a full tank of petrol at the outset and return the car near to empty and just 'walk away'. My car had half a tank for which I left a credit card deposit of 30 euros (nearly a full tank I would imagine). If I brought it back half full I would get this refunded but if it was less I would lose my 30 euros - not exactly the no hassle deal I was expecting. As it happens when I returned the car half full I could not find anyone to verify this and get my credit card transaction cancelled. I am still waiting to see whether the 30 euros have been transacted or not.

Re the traffic chaos at Lagoa.

Before the traffic lights were put in by the petrol station at Lagoa there was a roundabout there. This used to work perfectly well with none of the tailbacks we always seem to get now.

It's about time the Carvoeiro community got onto the local authority to sort this mess out. I know the extension of the IP1 will help but that's next year.

Wrong! There are communial tips but items to be tipped attract a charge. What a surprise that the Portuguese leave them on the side of the road. thanks for the reply. have actually had my eyes tested because i have had problems. usually appreciate all the beautiful things in Carvoeiro. Of course there are always going to be ignorant people in any country who drop rubbish etc. and don't respect the beautiful surroundings they have. If council tax is £ 140 then that is still cheap compared to UK and are there no local town tips like in UK where people dispose of larger items?? Carvoeiro is a lovely town with lovely people so hope it stays that way. Petition power usually does the trick here in UK re. getting council to do something - maybe something can be done that way. Re previous message regarding reply to problems in Carvoeiro I can only presume that you are due for an eye test at your opticians if you are not aware of old sinks,baths,fridges,mattresses,sun loungers,gardeners rubbish and general garbage scattered around the roadside rubbish bins and along the roads. This may not all be happening outside The Round up Bar or The Ice Cream Parlour,but Carvoeiro does stretch a bit further out than "restaurant hill" Have a look around VDM, Poco Partido, near the El Paso Bar,Val do Milho, the road to Lagoa.

Oh by the way You are way out with council tax by about 10 times and car tax 3-5 times. You are obviously a very regular visitor

Re Zebra Crossings tha melt into the tarmac message

Has no one therefore realised that they might be using the wrong system for creating visible zebra crossings and white lines. If they only last for a short time its a waste of everybodys money. Maybe the local authority could ask their counterparts in Spain, France,Italy etc etc. how they make their crossings more permanent.

As we in the uk are constantly reminded that we must comply with European standards are we too coming to expect weather removeable road safety signage.

Perhaps they could use the same sort of paint that is used on the graffitti on the motorway hoardings and all around Carvoeiro- That seems to be pretty permanent

There is a Dolphin safari which goes from the new marina at Praia Rocha. As they are wild animals there is no guarantee that you will see them but the hit rate is pretty good. We saw a group of approx 8 which their young, they swam and jumped right next to the boat and it was fantastic to see them in the wild, far more inspirational than in a tank at zoo marine.! Also the boat ride alone is worth the money!

There's a little bar called the Jailhouse in a village by the sea, and when your in Carvoeiro it's the place you ought to be, There's something there for everyone, no matter what their age, to top that every evening there's live music on the stage. Bobby Stardust sings and plays guitar some games chit chat a pun, So if you want to dance and sing come along, join in the fun There's pool table on the terrace, good service and friendly staff, and the evening allways seems to ring to Karens lovely laugh. On Sunday night when Angies in, she take a starring roll, cos when she's had a few to drink, she dances round the pole. There's alex who sings a tune or two, guest artist that you'll know, so once you step inside the bar you'll never want to go !!!!

re. message about local businesses complaining, rubbish and garbage etc. I would like to say that I am amazed that the town has always looked good to me. seemingly portuguese 'council' tax is only £ 14? per year, car tax £ 12? but in UK I am paying £1000 per year for local services and over £100 car tax - and our roads, rubbish etc is much worse so Carvoeiro is doing quite well and on previous visits we have always had friendly chats with locals. Having just returned from The Algarve, Carvoeiro in particular, I have never heard so many business people complaining about how quiet everything is and how much worse the tourism trade is down,"worse than last year and that was bad enough"

Could I respectfully suggest that you all stop feeling sorry for yourselves, get your finger out and do something positive-not just moan.

Badger your local authority to who Carvoeiro as an area contribute one hell of a lot of money to do something about the problems with the infrastructure,the state of the roads, exterior decoration of properties, garbage and rubbish everywhere,dangerous pavements, unseeable zebra crossings, lack of entrance facilities into many establishments for the disabled, total disregard of health and safety and fire regulations in many establishments. and on and on!

I love the place, but be careful your charming old village doesnt turn into a scruffy little town( only a fine line divides) Thats the infrastructure-now the business people. Since todays tragic news that yet another bomb blast has occurred on one of Spain's holiday costas you should be trying to cash in on those tourists who still fancy the Iberian Peninsular but are getting nervous.

SMILE that is one thing everyone dealing with the public should learn to do.GIVE GOOD SERVICE. Thats another thing.AND DONT KEEP PUTTING YOUR PRICES UP & UP. Your main clients being Northern Europeans have not got bottomless pockets and you have alot of competition(Ask the Germans)

Come on Dont just talk about it - Do something about it.

Re: traffic in Caroeiro and road closure, my family was out there in May/June this year. A couple of our ex-pat friends there were talking about the probable closure of the roads east and west out of the town, because the cliffs are so unstable. Maybe just for heavier vehicles, but the implications are obvious...

If they close the Rua de Barranco too where does all the traffic go? Perhaps they should build a nice 1960s concrete multi-storey car park just out of town and lay on a few more of those road trains to ferry people in and out.

Good question!

I am observing the daily insanity from my little office space just off the square or while having a coffee in Smilers and it beats the hell out of me.

Park your car? Only if they start renting out lots of Smarts will you actually be able to find a parking space within a Kilometer of the square. (Beware, the police will tow your car away if you leave it on the Taxi park!) Or you will suffer some form of cardiac arrest when walking back up the hill to the church after dinner.

If it can be avoided, do not go through Carvoeiro, use the routes round Areias dos Moinhos, Poço Partido, etc.

We will wait and see what concept they have devised to close down Rua do Barranco. God help us if it was thought up by the same blokes who are responsible for the landscaping in Carvoeiro.

Concerning thefts etc. All those visiting Carvoeiro, please don't be over concerned with the comments you hear, just be vidulant! We have been visiting Carvoeiro for 8 years and rarely hear and have never seen any problems. Unfortunately there are thiefs every where, it is a problem we all have to live with but Carvoeiro is a lovely place with good natured people with far less crime than most areas.

Had a great two weeks holiday, but anyone with a toddler between the age of about 2 - 4 beware of the the little boy belonging to the woman whom sells t-shirts on the corner of the hotel near the square, he is very wild and just flys for the face for no reason at all ,we were not the only ones to witness this. do not let this put you of going as its a really great place for families. just cross over to the other side of the road.

Just returned from Carvoeiro for the sixth time...

Some eating places I found to be very good. I have visited some before previous years and have enjoyed going back again - delighted that things are just as good as ever.

O'Cantinho - Portugese fish/steak restaurant. Very good, excellent service from team of waiters who have been there for years...Try the Steak Portugese Style or the sea bass.

Chinatown - Excellent all round chinese food, try the crispy aromatic duck...you will not be disappointed! Very friendly service and the staff remembered us from our last visit 2 years ago!

Vale De Milho Restaurant - in the Vale de Milho estate near the golf club. Traditional Portugese fayre, but make an evening of it. You are expected to occupy your table for the whole evening i.e. You will not be rushed out of the place so that they can turn around more customers. Settle back and relax, enjoy the views and the port!

Steak House - Sitting on the pavement was a bit hairy for passers by when the Stone Steak was ordered....complete with bib! Nice food and a fiendly welcome!

Casa Algarvia - Lovely atmosphere and a friendly welcome. Food good too...this restaurant gets quite busy so get there early or book!

Primervera - Meditteranean Restaurant - Top of hill towards Rocha Brava. This was by far the best restaurant we ate at, the best food/service and if you can get a table outside...the best surroundings. The food was served almost Nouvelle Cuisine like and it seemed a shame to sometimes destroy the chef's artistry. All this at a price though as it's quite expensive. A meal for six (three starters, six main courses, four desserts, a round of drinks, a caraff of house wine and two bottles of water - came to 150 Euros (£100) which is pricy compared to all the other restaurants listed above. But if you can afford it - don't miss this place! Book well in advance as we had to wait 4 days to get the table for six outside that we wanted!

The Girffiths Family:- Best places to eat we have found are O'Tasco, China Town Resturant ( Next to O'Tasco) these are up the main road leading to Rocha Brava, also another one is Oasis on the Road out of Carvoeiro but you will need to book which ever night you go there and if you go try the Ribs, but saying that we have been to carvoeiro for 6 years and never had a bad meal in any of the Resturants, have a lovely holiday.
