CLIPPING FROM LOCAL NEWS PAPPER

Illegal taxi drivers at Faro Airport

Faro Airport Police are cracking down on illegal taxi drivers and so called Transfer Company’s. Its seems that there has been a large increase of manly foreign residents who take on the roll of taxi drivers, not only in old and unsafe vehicles but even in foreign registered ones. We spoke to a local legal company based in Carvoeiro and there comments were

“Its about time, We spend thousands of euros on Alvaras”licences” to the state and tourism board, vehicle insurance and passenger insurance, plus the cost of setting up our company and finally the actual vehicles them selves which cost hundreds of thousands of euros due to there speck, air con, ABS air bags, all the extras cost a lot of money, but add to the comfort and safety of our passengers.”

It’s very upsetting when you see non-legal residents in sometimes-non-insured vehicles, collecting and dropping people of at Faro; again in some cases old unsafe, and noisy ford transits or estate cars. For a little or sometimes no difference in price to legal company’s.

Faro police will be watching more carefully for these people, making note of there vehicle registration and detaining any one suspicious waiting for tourists with hand written name boards with no company name or alvara in site. Legal company’s have also been asked to forward any information on rogue taxi drivers to the PSP Police at Faro airport or there local station of the GNR.

Re Mestro Maco

I'm afraid I have to differ when you say this place is good! Having lived here for a very long time and speakng very good Portuguese I have NEVER found what I am looking for and several times been sold the wrong product even though the staff swore blind it was what I wanted!! Makes sure that you open whatever it is you "think" you want, the staff are useless even when they understand what you are saying let alone when they don't!!!!

Re Take-aways in Carvoeiro - there is a new one recently opened on the in road, just a short way down on the left (opposite Zecca's bar). We went there 4 times during our 2 week holiday and had the best chicken piri piri outside of Guia/Monchique. It was recommended to us by Flavio from Sully's bar, who gets his tea there most nights! Give it a try - it's cheap and delicious.

The Diy place is called Mr Maco, it's no where near as big as a B & Q warehouse but it does have most things you will need. Bit hard to find English speaking staff if you need any advice.

By the way;

Breaking or imitating a state seal constitutes fraud and will get the infractor several years in the state penn.

It is more likley, that he simply practiced higher prices that the station in Lagoa.

That is legal and up to the consumer to tolerate or not.

Re: Gas station:

Check for the state seal "02" on the side of each pump. If it exists the pump cannot be tampered with as they would have to break this seal, consequently being shut down by the next inspector.

To the Ilford Avenue resident, Jack & daniella only appeared on the street early June this year. They never go the square because of the other street dogs that live there ! Jack is fawn and looks like a greyhound. Daniella is black & tan and half the size of Jack. The vet says Daniella is not 1 yet and Jack is about 3. There was a big dog and his side kick who patrolled the square by the beach when we were there recently but we are not bringing them back. Are you thinking of the same dogs?

Loule market is good, I think its on Saturdays. Have never attempted to walk into Carvoeiro from VdM.

Re cashing travellers cheques. I have asked our holiday company reps who say there is a fairly universal charge in the village of £8.00 per transaction no matter how much. However, I telephoned the American Express agents - Top Tours (in Portimao and Quarteira) who have told me their charges for Amex cheques are 1% for cashing Euro cheques and only the exchange rate - currently 0.651 - for Sterling with no admin charges. Hope this helps.

By the way, thanks for info on launderette - has anyone actually used it?

Did you know that the Cepsa gas station in Carvoeiro is ripping people off!! I have been using that gas-station for the past 5 years, a few days ago I happened to be in Lagoa and thought would be easier to get gas there. I got an extra quarter tank of gas, for the same 25 Euros that I always pay in Carvoeiro. I know that they are privatly owned, so there is no one to control how there pumps are working. Hopefully someone soon will find this out and fix it.

Re single golfers - Just book a morning tee time at Gramacho (before 10am) and it is almost guaranteed that they will put you with other players - I have had many pleasant rounds with some very nice people this way. (It does not work quite so well on the Pinta course since almost everyone takes buggies and this tends to make it more antisocial than walking round together). If you play later in the day then the course can be quite empty, so you could end up going round on your own, though this, given the beauty of the course and the views, can still be a very enjoyable way to spend a few hours.

Re Jack & Daniella. Thank you for your kindness. You obviously saw in Jack & Daniella what we have seen. Linda Pixley is the lady looking after them at present. She runs the APAA. She only wants a donation to the charity which of course we are giving. The quarantine would have cost over £3000. Linda will not accept such a large amount of money but we aim to drip feed her so she won't notice how much we are giving. If you wanted to contribute to care of Jack & Daniella whilst they are in Portugal I am sure Linda would be most grateful of your contribution. She does such marvellous work and asks for so little.

An English cheque can be made payable to the APAA and sent to the following address

APAA Apartado 101 8501 903 MEXILHOEIRA GRANDE Portugal

Thanks once again and best wishes

Manchester, so glad they are in my neck of the woods, (well almost) how are you fixed towards veterinary expenses,(please don't take it the wrong way) but if you need a donation at any time would be happy to help it is so expensive.

Hi, coming to Carvoeiro in two weeks and have just discovered this villa doesn't have a washing machine. Don't worry, the last thing I want to do is wash clothes on holiday, but it does make it easier if we can bring less with us, especially for the kids. Does anyone know if there is a laundry service or laundromat in Carvoeiro we could use? I think I can remember seeing one but can't remember where! Thanks

Recently returned from 2 weeks on Rocha Brava complex. Stayed in a fabulous apartment (Casa Madeira). Didn't think the two larger pools were too bad but small pool did tend to get dirty! Found some great restaurants in Benegil but would highly recommend Julios near Rocha Brava.

Best place for sardines

Go to Portimão and eat sardines in front of the river, go at night it's really pleasent. They have a great menu which is 8 huge prawns and 8 sardines for about 18 euros, it's ment to be for two people but that depends how hungry you are!!!! We went the other night had a kilo of grilled prawns, 2 jars of sangria, sardines for two,1 squid and the 18 euro menu, coffee and soft drinks and paid around 150 euros not bad!

It's not the going down to Carvoeiro from Vale de Milho, but the going back up the steep, winding hill, without pavements for most of the way. I certainly wouldn't do it. I guess it would take between half an hour and an hour - has anyone done it who can give a definitive answer?

I will be staying at the Casa Rustica in Carvoeiro from 22nd August until 5th September and want to play golf a couple of times each week. Is there anybody that fancies a game with an 18 handicap during that time. I will not be hiring a car so it will have to be local.

If interested you can contact me on brireid@tiscali.co.uk

Re: Vale de Milho There are two decent restaurants on the edge of the development on the coast road near the entrance to Rocha Brava. The closest Beach is about a quarter of a mile back towards Carvoeiro from the Rocha Brava entrance. Part of the beach is overlooked by a small cafe/bar. Some nice sea views. When the tide is in, the part overlooked by the cafe is virtually covered by the sea. Go a hundred yards or so further round (there's a path that goes past the cafe) and there's a good sized beach, even when the tide is in. Some rocky, cliff scenery to the left of the lighthouse on the edge of the development.I agree that a car is a must. Silves, which is inland, has a nice castle and a small covered market.

Vale do Milho is a long walk from the town, up a very steep hill, I wouldn't attempt it myself, especially at night.

The nearest restaurants are Julios (nice but expensive) or Vale do Milho restaurant. Depending on where you are staying on the complex, either might be quite near or 15-20 minute walk (they are at opposite ends of the complex). You might also be able to walk to Rochamar (again depending on where you are on the development).

The nearest beach is Centeanes, which is down a steep path, but lovely at the bottom.

To go inland, it is worth visiting Monchique and Silves. Loule market is often recommended but I have never been there myself.

We have stayed on Vale do Milho several times and really enjoyed it, but a car is essential.

Arriving in Carvoiero shortly - first time - staying in Vale de Milho - anyone got any comments on this area - Which is the nearest beach? Good family restaurants in walking distance to Vale de Milho?

Also the ladies in our party (sorry for being sexist) like to visit the local markets - which ones can be recommended.

Finally I am told it is worth driving inland up into the hills - where should I head for - any good suggetions would be welcome.

Thanks

Coming back to Carvoeiro mid August after a wonderful first visit last year.Staying at Areia Dos Moinhos this year, is the town centre walking distance ? Last year we stayed almost opposite L'Orange Resaurant and we found this a comfortable walk. What is closest bar to Areia Dos Moinhos for that afternoon drink when it gets a little too hot for some of us ? Finally, have either of the water parks added any new rides this year ?

Update on Jack & Daniella. The vet has discovered that jack has both Heartworm and Sandfly. Both are treatable but would have killed him living on the street. We have now decided to keep dogs in Portugal with the APAA to get their pet passport whilst Jack's illneses are being treated. This should take 6 months and means they do not go into quarantine. They will be living in Crosby in Liverpool and will be spoilt rotten.

Re. Forest Fires:

The item shown on Sky News referred in fact to fires more in the Alentejo region, just north of the Algarve and no way near to Carvoeiro or surrounds. There have been some fires in the area around Silves, believed to have been deliberately started, but they have been quickly contained by the Bombeiros.

To the person who thought Rocha Brava was run down. I have been going for 20 years now, originally as a 1/4 ashare owner and now as a full property owner. I and the people I know who own the property spend a lot of time and money keeping the villa in tip top condition. In fact everything has been renewed in our villa- the next major job wiwill be a new kitchen, but all equipment is no older than 18 months. The other owners are even more particular than I am and thier villas are lovely. I can only assume you have been very unlucky. (I do know that one apartment near me is owned by someone who does nothing but rent it out, so it does get worn). The management work hard to keep the gardens and pools at their best. It does get busy in the summer, but that is the price you pay for going to a popular place, but it is very firendly and not noisy. I would recommend the place to everyone.

I found Bougainvillea Properties the best in terms of the range of properties they had available(an english chap spent the day with us & we drove the whole length of the coast almost viewing property - we weren't sure where we wanted to buy). Their number is 00 351 289 413 199 - the chap we dealt with is Steve Willsher - he arranged a lawyer etc. for us & drove us around while we arranged power of attorney & other documents. The service they provided was excellent & I'd recommend them.

Re children's play area. There is a lovely play area at the top of the road leading up the left hand side of the beach as you look out to sea.It is behind the church on the headland.Your child will also enjoy the train ride although I think it can be a bit long for adults!!

We've stayed at Rocha Brava many times and have never had any problems with the accomodation. Relax and look forward to your stay.

Has anyone stayed at Rocha Brava through Unijet. Have seen on the message board that someone has stayed at this complex and the property is in a not too good state. Could anyone therefore confirm this.

Rocha Brava is fantastic! You can walk into the village but a bit of a trek if the weather's really hot. However, free minibus down into town a couple of times during the day and the local bus service stops just outside the complex. Taxi fares are really cheap too. Have a super time - we can't wait to get back there - roll on `Aug 3rd!

To John asking about the distance from Salicos to Carvoeiro, In my opinion it is far too far to walk, the cost of transport however you should be able to find out from this site as a local taxi firm advertise here.

Hope you enjoy your holiday
