We have a villa just outside Carvoeiro which requires a car to get to anywhere. My father would like to be able to go for a walk from the villa to a local bar for a drink and a chat but it is far too far for him to walk as he is 69. So I had the idea that I could get him one of thoes tiny vans that you see the elderly Portugese farmers driving? so he could have a bit of freedom when we all go on holiday togeter. The only trouble is I have no idear where to buy one and would be grateful if anyone could please let me know where I might find one. It would make a soon to be 70 year old very happy.

For a day out with a difference why not go upto Silves & get the train to Lagos ~ takes around 35 mins & costs only €2.80 RETURN !!

The train arrives into Lagos next to the Marina & then it's only a 10/15 min walk into the main town.

Went to fabrico do ingles last year (excursion) Long journey by coach to get there...once there you are given a drink...It was the nicest glass of port I have ever had..silly me took only a small glass thinking it was sherry, never mind can't win them all! Have to admit the food was poor,and the portugese dancers could only be seen by those seated in the lower section,wine was fine,although nothing special. The lazer show Could have lasted a little longer,as the kids loved it, and to be honest it would have been better earlier on in the evening, and not at the end,the kids were tired by then. I won't be going back this year,but I would not say to others don't go, either.Each to his own.

He,he,he,he someone didn't like my message!!!! No I don't like the Fabrica do Ingles, but that's what I think, other people can judge for themselves. As for sitting in English bars sipping warm beer and wathching Sky, I don't do that either. In fact I don't think I have EVER been into one of the English, German,Dutch,etc bars in carvoeiro and don't think I ever will!!!! I am quiet happy with my boring routine of housework, work, portuguese television and trying to get through Carvoeiro with my car in one piece!!! When you leave messages don't assume everyone is a tourist or gin tonic ex-pat. Think again, there are people reading who have a real untouristy (is that a real word?) life mixing with portuguese people and living the portuguese way, but can read this and leave a valid comment about Carvoeiro life. Seriously, thats the way I felt about the place, maybe it has changed this year? If so, I'd still like to see so for myself... I don't know Mike or the rest of the staff, they probably won't remember me when I go back this year... but thats the way I feel about the place up to now, mostly due to the way I was treated by the staff when I was there...

On a slightly different note... Does anyone know what the Mirachoro hotel is like? I slept on a bathroom floor there last year in the suite of some couple I met in the Jailhouse... I've only ever stayed at Rocha Brava but want somewhere closer to town this year... Any suggestions?...

for the person who thinks fabrica is dull with a most excellent dance show then such a person is to be pitied. if you think its dull then stay in Carvoeiro watching sky sports at the English bars paying high prices.. meantime those who come on holiday to a foreign country might indeed enjoy seeing something you cannot see at home. last year the entrance fee was about 4 euros...for three hours of entertainment with lasers, aqua shows, flamenco one cannot complain.....unless you enjoy warm English beer and hamburgers...then stay in Carvoeiro

I'd just like to point out to people that I have been going to Carvoiero for the last 15 years. I only discovered Joker's Bar last year and I ate breakfast there every day. I was always greeted with a cheery smile and some light hearted banter. Even after the atrocities of Sept. 11th the staff there including Mike managed to lighten the atmosphere. All I can say is maybe you caught him on a bad day ?.

Also, I always found the prices very reasonable and wasn't ever overcharged... to the contrary in fact; they gave us complimentary drinks on a number of occasions.

It has been defined, that all banks throughout the EU are not allowed to charge foreigners more comission for credit card withdrawals than residents of that country.

How anybody from outside Portugal would know how much portuguese banks charge is beyond me though.

I hope there will be a reliable source for this information soon.
