Just returned after an excellent 2 weeks in Carvoeiro. Stayed in a villa on the Areias dos Moinhos development which was lovely. Very good choice of restaurants in Carvoeiro, a good meal every night, some do some don't take credit cards. Hired a car, well worth it to see other beaches etc. Ref. comments on travellers cheques etc. We used 'hole in the wall machines' at the banks without problems, credit cards and also were only charged 2 euros for cashing a 100 euro travellers cheque at a tourism/car hire/bank place down near the square. Again, a good, informative website. Will visit it regularly.

Just came back from Colina Da Lapa (27/6/02). What an excellent complex. Villa was spot on,Cosmos reps excellent,kids club great,staff helpful.Didn't want to come home!!! Carvoeiro is a great little town with some good restaurants. Never experienced anyone trying to overcharge us though!!Just a word of warning though,the Colina da Lapa complex is a fair way from Carvoeiro town so if you don't have a car you will need to use the Taxi's but they are spot on too!!

Gonna see if we can't squeeze another holiday in later in the year!!

Why does Mike (jokers) run a bar? He has to be the most rude person to customers in town, also check your bills, known for overcharging. No wonder the place is always empty. Shame! Deans a good bloke and the place could be a decent bar.

Credit cards? not accepted in many restaurants I tried.

We too are staying at Colina da Lapa with 3 young children - but we are only travelling on 18/7/02 - so you will have been and gone by the time we get there! However we have booked our car hire here in the UK through www.all-inclusive-car-hire.com/faro-airport.shtml - (as previously recommended on this site - see message board 1/5/02 - also gives a good review of Colina da Lapa). We have booked a Ford Focus (inc child seat) for 2 weeks for 590 Euros and are collecting the car at Faro Airport but they do deliver to Accomodation too. Let us know how you go on. Also look forward to hearing your comments re the Apartments when you get back.

Re cash flow!!!

We have four cash machines and one in Intermache where you can get cash almost all of the time. Most places take credit cards and direct debit cards e.g. Maestro and Switch, if you are really worried about running out of cash why not bring some with you? It is very easy to change up money at the bank and then you can come on holiday knowing if you get stuck there is always something to fall back on. Most cash machines are filled up on Friday, and of course pretty low on Monday. If Carvoeiro hasn't cash try Lagoa they have lots of machines. Don't worry you won't have any problems!! Jo, I don't find your comments patronising at all - only an attempt to help. Thanks. But it's a question of choice and balance. I've heard of cases like the last comment of cash machines running out. Also two people I met last year had their cards damaged by machines and were unusable at the start of their holiday - they were snookered! Also last year I had some strange amounts appear on my CC statement. Luckily I kept my receipts and the CC company sorted it out for me. So I'm a bit wary of using cards there - I only go once a year so it's more difficult to sort out if something goes wrong. Travellers cheques are much safer - they can be replaced by Amex by the next day. The balance is the stories of very high commission rates to cash travellers cheques that worry me. I don't understand, though, how commission can be charged for cashing Euro TCs into Euros? Or are the stories false, or are they talking about Sterling TCs? Help and info from someone who knows would be greatly appreciated by many of us. Thanks anyway. Les

BUT .... why do so many of you want to take travellers cheques?? You don't need them!

Take enough cash for taxi etc if using one and then use the whole in the wall or pay by credit card for the rest of your stay.

It's worked out cheaper for us everytime. The only thing you need to check is your credit card's small print about any charges. We've never had any on ours.

Re Sky; I experienced the same situation as yourself and this is how I solved the problem. At home in the UK I subscribe to cable tv and receive sky sports and other premium channels through this provider. I then approached a dealer here in the UK who supplied me with a sky digibox. He then sent for a bbc free to air card and linked it to my box. I paid for the cost of the box, about £100 and then flew over with the box and card. I could have bought the whole sky package and it would have worked just the same. It was installed in about 5 minutes into the house and works as any TV does. I am not too sure about having two sky accounts to one property. I am aware though that this type of thing is common practice. The free to air card does not offer anywhere near as much choice but does get you bbc1 and 2 plus channel 4 and 5. For some reason i am unable to get ITV. I could though apply now to upgrade the package through Sky and that would be no problem. Good luck

Re Sky enquiry, I would strongly suggest you engage one of the companies in the area to help on this. I have the full monty sky in the UK but have also installed free to air digital in carvoeiro which works perfectly. However the free to air is registered to my home address as an additional box in the UK. You may have problems doing the full monty in both countries. You will need at least a 120cm dish for the digital service. Try Arron on 00351 282 357843. He can get the box and then supplies you with the serial number which you need for the card to match the box. At this point you ring the BBC for the free to air card and quote the serial number. They send the card to your UK address and you send it on to the installer to match the box to the card. It's a pain but it works. Don't forget that receiving Sky premium channels is not permitted outside the UK and the BBC free to air isn't either....good luck.
