Ref rental rates quoted: The site showed a Euro price of 250 which is approx £156. The owner's rate sheet showed £385 which equates to 616 Euros - quite a difference!

RE the rates shown on the rental pages - Usually from Nov - April rates are different per month and as there are only 4 choices ie low - peak - owners have to put in their rates for the periods according to the month it is in - if there are any grey areas - these are not included. Someone correct me if Im wrong but surely Peak/Jul-Aug;High/MidJun&MidSep;Med/MidMay-MidJun;Low/Mar-Apr and then usually EndSep-Beg Nov-somewhere tweenlow/med? Hope this makes sense - incidentally if you use the Euro convertor on the site it is quite accurate give or take a couple of pounds! Would be interested to hear what other people have to say? thanks

sitenote on euro's: Each and every member of the EU has an obligation to put euro prices on products beside the normal price up until 01.01.2002 when the euro is accepted to be a legal currency.

Over the years, visiting Portugal, there always have been "moneymachines" where you can use your regular bank cards!

Thanks for clearing the confusion. I wondered why the shops showed prices in Euro's when you couldn't use them until Jan 2002 - now it all becomes clear.

If a bank will not accept Travellers cheques (which I find a little hard to believe as I was there in April and had no problem changing them)will a Bureau de Change accept them? I'm baffled, they are recognised internationally, why on earth would they not change them?

We were delighted to discover your web site having been fans of Carvoeiro for years. After studying the villa rental section we thought we could afford another visit but unfortunately someone got their Euros mixed up and the price shown on the site was a fraction of the rate requested by the owner. Rather than face yet more disappointment is there anyone who knows of a two bedroom villa/apartment for two weeks 10 Oct to 24 Oct or thereabouts at a maximum £250 per week (pref less!) - please note I have used pounds sterling and not Euros! It is for two adults and one child (13), a pool would be nice - my e-mail is: martinlamy@hotmail.com - Apart from the incorrect prices which I realise are not your fault, the site is very good but I would much rather be in Carvoeiro than looking at your site!

Re Fish & Chip Shop We have only just tried the cod & chips and found them to be excellent and well worth a visit to either sit in or take away. For ex-pats in the area it is a little bit of nostalgia to queue up at the "chippy" once again and we wish the owner good luck in her new business.

Re: Fish and chip shop

What a nasty, vicious, bitter piece of work you sound. You really shouldn´t listen to hearsay. Living and working in Carvoeiro I take an interest in new businesses that open and sorry to disappoint you but the chip shop looks to be doing very well. I´ve heard nothing but good comments about it and have never seen it empty. It would seem that perhaps there´s a bit of the old green eyed monster in that Anne has got the get up and go to set up and run a successful business. As to your totally uncalled for personal comment about her partner, not husband, leaving -don´t worry she´s not looking too upset about it.

Perhaps you should seek therapy to get rid of all that anger within you. Please try to remember that the message board is supposed to be for useful comments about Carvoeiro, not a place to vent your frustrations.

Just come back from business trip and catching up on Messages!!! Webmaster, I too noticed that the pages are a lot slower in loading than have been previously - is there any reason for this? Also, you HAVE to eat Chicken Piri Piri on the mountain (at Therese's) - brilliant and very big portions - but get there early - coz it gets very busy (12 noon latest!!) Missing my daily weather report - hurry back!!

For the person asking about weather conditions due to temporary breakdown of webcam go, click on WeatherStat on left hand margin. You will see a box which says "Weather conditions in Faro" which will give you a general idea of the temperature, click on this box & it will give you a more detailed report on weather conditions. Whatever it says it is generally a good few degrees warmer, especially in Carvoeiro! Happy Holidays.

Piri Piri Helpline

They (you know who I mean) reckon that the best piri piri is found in either Guia or Monchique. Some places in Carvoeiro may be ok but I reckon the Piri Piri you will find served at KAZY restaurant just over the bridge in Silves is ace. They also do good pizzas so if the kids don't want the frango they can eat as well

Try it, good grub, friendly and good value

Re: chicken piri piri

I think what you ate was pipis not chicken piri piri, pipis are a traditional Portuguese dish. Chicken necks, livers and hearts cooked in a garlic, tomato, onion sauce. If that is what you are expecting it's very good, otherwise!!!!

On Easter Saturday I arrived a villa in Praia Da Marinha at 20:00. No shops around and didn't know where the nearest town was.

Knew Carvoeiro to be the largest locally so luckily found the InterMarche by 21:00....

No you haven't upset me...don't try and flatter yourself. It takes more than that to upset me! This whole thing started because you were in fact rude and said I was either 'loaded or daft'.

I am neither...but I have spent the last six years holiday at Carvoeiro and I know exactly how much I have spent! I have also helped people on this site with locations and advice etc since the site started.

I am not arguing the fact that you can probably spend a lot less than we do on holiday and go 'native style' finding cheaper restuarants and just sunbathing/swimming etc. What I'm trying to say is, that is not everybody's cup of tea. I like to spend a bit of money on holiday and so do lots of other people. After all you have probably only two weeks to cram everything in. All I am trying to do is to make sure 'first timers' go with enough money to have a very comfortable time.

See if we can agree on the following then:

Spending money for 5 people:

£800-£1000 ...OK you can survive and have a very good holiday, you will have to watch the money though and look for good value when eating out etc.

£1000-£1200...No worries eating out every night, pressies for Mum, excursions, visits etc.

£1200-£1600...A very comfortable time, enough to not worry about a thing, eat at the more pricier restaurants if you wish, and enough to bring back ciggies, bottles, and pressies. A few games of golf thrown in too! And you might bring a few bob back home!

Is that better? - hope that makes it a little clearer what we are both trying to say.

By the way we are giving Carvoeiro a miss this year...just a change after going six years on the trot. The island of Rhodes has the pleasure of taking my hard earned money from me this year!

Tony

PS..I know about the submit button. I pressed it once honest! It still put it in twice though!

Well I have upset our friends haven't I?!

You should read what I wrote - not what you think I said!

No we don't talk about prices of hols etc on the plane - there's enough people bragging about how much they have/own/how many times abroad etc that the information is freely given!

We're always in good company - english & portuguese - to talk about trivia! Too busy eating, drinking and socialising! That is when we're not sunbathing/swimming etc listening to all the posers!

As for confetti - never take any!!!! Too environmentally friendly for me own good!

Just think all this started cos I said you could go for less!

When are you next in Carvoeiro - we'll show you how to do it native style!!

Jo (what's your name by the way?)

PS - Please note,I haven't written rude comments about you!

PPS - WE don't bring pressies back cos we have too many friends!!!

PPPS - you only have to press submit once for your message to appear! Speak to you again - lots of love!!!!

Nobody mentioned bringing back golf shirts as a competition amongst friends. That's not what it's about....it's called being kind and thoughtful and not sad at all!

What I find very sad is....you sat on the plane talking about how much you've paid compared to your fellow passengers! "OooooH! We didn't pay that much did we luv?". Now that is SAD!

I bet your evening mealtime and conversation with your friends is centered around the same subject too! How much you paid for the flight, how much you paid for meals, how much you paid for the holiday! Good conversation....Pur-leeze!

It just goes to show you're as tight as a camel's arse in a sandstorm!

Let me ask you one more question " When you attend a wedding do you have your confetti on elastic?"

Areais dos Moinhos

Stayed same villa past 8 years, excellent location lovely walk down to the village, bit of an uphill struggle in the heat of the day though. Careful of cars on the road as there are no pavements for most of the walk from Areais to the road end which leads down to the village. Shop which sells most things in Areais next to Reception also cafe/bar. hope you enjoy as much as we have...6 weeks tomorrow and we'll be back again.

Re Areais dos Moinhos

We have stayed in the same villa for the past 8 years and have been very happy. A good stroll down to the village...an endurance test back uphill especially during the heat of the day. Watch the cars/taxis on the road a bit like the wacky races(no pavement for the bulk of the walk from Areais dos Moinhos to start of the hill into the village) There is a shop in Areais which sells most things, also a cafe/bar and slightly further down the road bubbles bar, okay if you don't feel like walking to the village - kids loved using the swimming pool when they were younger, now prefer to have a Pint at the bar with us...chaged days indeed. Hope you enjoy it as much as we have and anticipate the same in June this year.

I'm looking forward to getting a few miles training in the sun whilst I'm there.

Re: Eating out for 5

No I'm not tight with money! We NEVER went without but we don't like golf!! Obviously if you like that sort of thing it costs and maybe there's a competition among you and your friends to bring back as many different golf shirts as possible - very sad but I accept there are many who feel like you!!

For us Sun,wine and food in plenty with good friends is all we require. Carvoeiro gives us all that with change left over!

So those of you reading this website for the first time it doesn't cost all of us a lot of money! Also we always get good deals on flights and accomodation. The amount of times we've sat near people in a plane who've paid over the odds and we haven't is very satisfying!! Just think - you could bring back more golf shirts!!!!

Roll on October when we're back again! (Unless of course I get a good deal earlier!! Jo

Just looked at my credit card statements from last year re: eating out for 5 people:

O'Cantino - 14,750 esc Vale de Milho - 16,500 esc China Town - 15,200 esc Chef Antonio - 16,000 esc

These bills typically included 'Couverts' (olives/bread starters), main meals, sweets and about four rounds of drinks. Yes...we went to cheaper restaurants and didn't eat as much some nights, and also got bills of £30-35

Of course it will be cheaper if you do without couverts, only have a main course and no pudding! (WOT - No pudding!) But feeding growing teenagers is no joke and can add a couple of thousand Esc to the bill.

I just don't want anyone to be short of money on their last few days. There is nothing worse than pulling in the purse strings on the last few days of your holiday, and not everyone likes or even has the facility of taking their credit cards abroad.

It's much more fun to have plenty left and have a 'blow out' at the end of your hols.

We spent 2 weeks in C last year and found it really cheap.Eg Dining at one of the restaurants up the hill(I think it began with M)4 of us,all adults , dined on wonderful fresh tuna with a Lovely sauce(and huge portions) 3 bottles of wine, which was as good as any good australian and the bill came to less than £30.00.I don't know where you were eating! RE- message on expenditure for 5. I don't think I'm loaded or daft! You must be tight! An evening meal and a few drinks will account for half of the £100 per day I mentioned. Lunch and drinks for 5 will be about another £20...that's £70 already and the rest can quickly go on incidentals, entrance fees, excursions etc. It's also my choice to treat my family to their holiday and not expect them to pay out of their allowance. Your tightness is emphasised by the fact that you don't bring anything back. Your choice I know, but I prefer to bring back a few golf shirts for both myself and my friends that are only available over there. Also my estimation of £100 a day is generous I know, but at least anyone taking that amount will be sure of not running out of money. Of course you can spend less if you go to the cheapest places and be frugal - but who wants to do that on holiday!

Just read the message about how much it will cost for 2 adults and 3 teenagers. £1600 !! You must be loaded or daft!! It never cost us £100 per day! We found it very cheap and didn't go without. Also - why aren't your teenagers taking their own money?! If you limit them to a daily amount you'll be surprised how they learn to budget!! Also we didn't smoke! We ate and drunk plenty!! Also forget the pressies for taking home - nobody wants them anyhow! Go and enjoy Carvoeiro and still bring some change home!! Wish I was there now! Jo

We are two families who have just come back from Carvoeiro - SESMARIAS actually and have to totally DISAGREE with Karen from England!! Yes, there are some building works going on the main road where Rosa's Bar is (appears they are improving the pavement which is a good thing) and down the same road towards Ferragudo but that IS IT. The rest of Sesmarias, away from that road is just as peaceful and quiet as it always is. You were obviously in the wrong bit!! But, Hey wouldn't do for us all to like the same things!

Just some advice to an earlier message about budgeting for your holiday.

Two adults and three teenagers for a fortnight - you will probably need in the region of around £1600.

This is based on eating out every night! A meal for five with drinks will usually be about 15000 Esc. Buying in food will cost as much as going out, but it depends what you want to do. We enjoyed breakfast in the accomodation and a light lunch out in the town somewhere. I don't think I have come across anything on the Algarve that I considered more expensive than the UK. About £300 was spent on ciggies, booze and golf shirts to bring home...so if you don't need to do that, I reckon your looking at about £1200 for a comfortable time for five! Bank on about £100 a day and you'll be fine!

I agree! Be adventurous with the food.

But there is no reason why you shouldn't have the best of both worlds. I just happen to like English sausages done on the barby and a nice cup of English tea.

I also like to sample the local wine and food too! My favourite restuarants over the last six years have been O' Cantino and the Vale de Milho restaurant at the back of the estate. Both serving a variety of Portugese dishes. The Chinese restaurant up the hill opposite O' Cantino offers amazing value for money too - try the crispy aromatic duck and pancakes!

The local produce is very good - the shop baked bread rolls are absolutely delicious when warm, but must be eaten within a few hours or they go a bit leathery. Also the pastries require sampling too!

My mouth's watering now....."Throw another banger on the barby Ethel!"
