you can get a taxi from the airport or rent a car at the airport, there's plenty of choice when it comes to restaurants in carvoeiro but you should try chefe antonio and ele&ela.

Local food.

You can buy most foods in the local supermakets and some of the imported foods do cost a little more. But as the last writer said "be adventurous".

Most local foods are tasty and it is worth shopping in some of the local markets for fruit, veg etc,.The people are always friendly and willing to let you try things.

I have lived here for quite a few years now and there is less and less imported food on my shopping list.

I thought the whole point of going abroad was to experience something different to home, including food! NOTHING in Carvoeiro is THAT expensive and if you are reluctant to stray too much from your usual diet almost everything is readily available. But where's your sense of adventure, go on, try something DIFFERENT!! Enjoy!!!

You need to bring tea bags and coffee at least!

The tea bags available are only Liptons or similar - you cannot get PG Tips or Yorkshire Tea. I have only seen Nescafe Gold Blend or Nescafe powdered coffee, the ordinary Nescafe granules are not available on the Algarve. English sausages are available but pricey, same for cheese. I always freeze some bacon and sausage and stick them in the suitcase wrapped in a towel. After a five hour journey they were still semi frozen! They do not take up that much room and your suitcase should be fairly empty anyway...you do not need all those clothes!

You will appreciate a good banger done on the barby!

Re: we bring tea bags, coffee, butter and cheese Not being nasty or anything but it seems to be a bit silly brining all that stuff when you CAN buy it all here, and it's not too expensive butter is around 250$00 for 250g which isn't too bad unless you eat piles of it! Try using the Portuguese brands which are just as good if not better, that's all the fun of going n holiday experimenting new things! Happy holidays to anyone who is comming over this year

Re the bird query. The English name for these birds is Bee Eater, (the scientific name is Merops apiaster, the latin for bee eater). These birds eat birds and wasps and other flying insects and nest communally in burrows in sandy cliffs. Bird lovers might enjoy a trip to Quinta da Rocha on the Alvor estuary close to Carvoeiro. adrian pitches.

Re Cost and variety of food in the supermarket. No problems. There is an extremely large supermarket on the right hand side of the road just before you come into Carvoeiro...but I must admit in all the years we've been going we still prefer to shop within the local markets in Carvoeiro centre There is plenty to choose from fruit and veg is wonderful Butcher shop has great selection of whatever you want. There is also a market in the mornings...coming in one way system turn left up Rua dos Farol past shops and restaurants on the left Large white Building...fresh fish, butcher, baker, fruit and veg. Costs are all pretty cheap on the whole. We tend to take coffee, tea bags, butter and cheese with us as they tend to be quite dear and pretty pricey. Algarve is still the cheapest place we have been, either for eating in or eating out.... which is exactly what we will be doing 7 weeks today Counting down the days, Ah Bliss. Hope you enjoy as much as we do.

We are a group of five students from King's College London coming to Carvoeiro for a week's holiday before moving on to do a course in Lisbon for a month. Unfortunately, we have not had much luck in finding accomodation for that month, despite numerous attempts to find somewhere.

If anyone knows of somewhere that we could stay as close to the city centre as possible (although we will have a car), please let us know by leaving a message in response.

Thanks.

The local Bus comes through Carvoeiro on an hourly basis (not sure of the exact timetable but that you can check at the bus stop nearest to you). It will take you to Lagoa Terminal, from there you can catch buses to the rest of the Algarve. No buses to Carvoeiro at night though! (I think 8pm or 9pm is the latest).

I am the person who had fish and chips at Happy's twice and said that they are the very best fish 'n' chips we ever had anywhere. You see, we are Canadian and fish and chips that you may find over here is absolutely not fresh and batter is usually soggy and thick. Yes, we ate 12 other meals in the Algarve and we did eat in Portugese restaurants and enjoyed most but not all of them. So don't be so judgmental and critical.

OK OK read all the messages from the past week having just come back from Carvoeiro. * The weather has been brilliant and as of yesterday was 34 degrees - what more can you ask for * Nearly all of us swam in the pool and sea - cold yes - but not that cold!! * Beaches perfect * Sesmarias is a little dusty on the main road as they are building on the way down to Ferragud0 - but it doesn't look like a building site * Rosa's has definitely not gone up market as someone suggested - it is just the same - THANK GOODNESS!!!!! * Smilers bar - good as usual - (but not too happy with the United result) * Via Roma was fine although busy * Le Bistroquet - great for the meat although the sole was a bit dry - but atmoshpere great nonetheless *O Lotus in Lagoa - Wonderful as usual - typical, brilliant Portuguese food So everyone stop worrying, get out there, have a wonderful time, enjoy Carvoeiro for what it is - a beautiful place to relax in - forget the bad bits - and lets face it if everyone liked or enjoyed the exact same things - the world would be a very boring place!! Take care, From someone who has been going to Carvoeiro for 20 years!!!! and will carry on doing so for the next 20!!

PS If anyone knows the whereabouts of Anita Pugsley, I would be very interested to know!!!

To the person who asked if it warm enough to swim in the pools - I doubt it very much at this time of year- unless you find one that is heated! Having said that, kids dont seem to notice it as much as we do so who knows!! I was in Carvoeiro 3 weeks ago when the weather wasnt anywhere near as warm as it is now and my 12 year old son swam in both the pool and the sea. Mad of course!!

OK, this is getting really silly. I thought this message board was suposed to be informative, thus placing a warning about the POSSIBILITY of credit card fraud might help reduce the amount of fraud because people would be a bit more careful. If you dont like having your wonderful illusion shattered, fine, but don´t go whining about it when it happens to you!

A negative comment does not necessarily mean, that Carvoeiro has become a cespool of crime, but if you make it easy on people you will always have opportunists.

I am very confused by the comments about Le Bistroquet in the last message we ate there 4 nights out of 7 last year, but have read some very uncomplimentary comments about the restaurant in the last couple of weeks on the website - Is it as good as last year or has the standard dropped?

Just came back from Carvoeiro and the weather was beautiful. 25-30 degrees during the day. In the evenings it was a little bit cooler. Take a sweater or coat for the evenings and a bikini for on the beach. Colina Sol is perfect place to stay; nice appartement, great swimmingpool with view of Atlantic Ocean and very quiet!!! Le Bistroquet is a great restaurant to eat delicious steaks and mixed grill. You'll get fresh vegetables and great desserts. Staff is very friendly. Do not visit the Italian restaurant Via Roma. Is really bad!

Its comments about "british horrible food" that sours relations between visitors and residents. I'm sure not all Portuguese, or Italians, or Spaniards or whoever, eat English food all the time they are visiting our country so I dont think it unreasonable to expect some tourists to eat their 'home' foods in your country. You want our trade and our money so stop being such a hypocrite.

Just logged on to one of my favourite sites (haven't been able to for a while)and see we have all sorts of negative stuff. Carvoeiro is a very special place full of lovely people and places -lets keep it that way!

Now a little question ?? -- if 2 of us turned up at Faro airport last minute, and asked a taxi driver to find me accomodation (not over the top price wise)in Carvoeiro. Would they be able to do that? Is there last minute accomodation in May/June close to village?

Coming back in October but may come last minute May/June - hence my question.

many thanks Jo

What has happened, I have not logged in to my favourite web site for a week and when I do what do I find...fraudulent credit card transactions and exposure to things other than the sun. Please don't shatter the illusion. Nine years I have been coming to Carvoeiro with absolutely no horror stories, the opposite in fact. Bought a watch one year and it broke soon after my return home, I returned by post and got a replacement sent back alas it too broke, took it back the following year and they couldn't be more helpful and although just out of guarantee exchanged it. This is the type of service I have been used to enjoying. Will be returning on 16th of June this year. I am well aware of the rogues that are around, but they are in the minority and alas everywhere has them. So this year like every other I and my family will arrive at the villa, relax and take full enjoyment of being back in the best holiday resort we have ever been to! Can someone remind me where happy's restaurant is. Been in most restaurants over the years some better than others but never one that we have come out of saying we'd never go back. Our favourite has always been A Gale - right hand of road on way up the hill towards lighthouse. Will be there on first night of holiday in memory of father in law who sadly passed away in Nov - many a happy night we all spent there. Anyway lets lighten up on Carvoeiro's slip ups and highlight the positives.

I see that you are discussing the negative side of the Algarve. We have enjoyed the Algarve for many years and always thought of it as a very special place. We still do but have learned the hard way that is has the same problems found elsewhere. Last year my 28 year old daughter was walking on the beach among the cliffs at the end of Alvor beach when she rounded a corner and was grabbed on the breasts by a man who also exposed himself to her. So my advice to travellers is to enjoy your holiday but remember that no country is immune to these sorts.

Re: Credit Cards:

I agree that everyone who has been conned by fraudulent behaviour should have a right to defend themselves and should take up these problems directly with VISA, Mastercard, AmEx, etc., but in the interest of keeping this board clean and informative I think it would be a BAD idea to start publically defacing establishments in Carvoeiro because, let´s face it, if you are careful you should be fine and my warning was supposed to call your attention to that and not start a public defamation campaign!!!

My husband and I just came back from Rocha Brava in Carvoeiro and it was a great resort. We had a villa that was very basic but in beautiful grounds, immaculately kept, lots of different trees, palms, oleander trees (mine here in Ottawa is just a 3' tall shrub that I have to bring indoors for the winter), rosemary bushes (imagine that!). And it was a quiet and relaxing place to have a holiday.

I must recommend the restaurant "Happy's" in Carvoeiro. We ate there 3 times in 1 week, it was that good and very reasonable prices. Their fish and chips are the very best that we have ever had anywhere - it even beats the many fish and chips we've every had in England. We also ate at Catz Pyjamas Pizzeria and that it also a good pizza place. The Oasis Restaurant is recommended for their ribs but I would not recommend their fish dishes - they are soaked in grease, or maybe it is olive oil. Also, their chicken piri-piri was underdone. Beware!

After seeing all the towns/cities around Carvoeiro, we are glad we did not choose to stay in Portimao or Albuferia. Who wants a holiday in "pavementville". We did not want to leave to come home and now I am suffering from post-holiday depression. The Algarve is truly a lovely place and I would recommend it to anyone. Oh and one more note - if you are ever in downtown Faro, in the pedestrian area, don't miss having ice cream at a place called Gelataria Fiesta. They have ice cream in all manner of fruit flavour as well as covered with fruit cocktail or peaches. It is OUT OF THIS WORLD. If evey we go back to the Algarve, we will take a trip to Faro just for that ice cream. Anyways, I better stop although I could write pages of good things about the Algarve. Hope you all love it as we did.

I agree, if you've evidence of credit card fraud within the village you should name those responsible otherwise it will jusr carry on regardless. I think I too may have been a victim but will not know for sure until I get my next visa card bill but rest assured, when I do, and if there is evidence, I shall name the shop and do everything I can to persuade VISA to withdraw their facility. I think the most important/relevant point made was to keep your card with you or certainly within sight. The girl in the shop I refer too disappeared round the back saying there was something wrong with the machine but, as I said, I have to wait and see. It COULD have been pefectly innocent.

Re: Credit Cards.

I do not mean to cause unecessary mistrust and my apologies beforehand to all the honest buisness people in the Algarve: Credit Card users, be aware that some establishments will misuse your trust if you let your credit card out of your sight. No matter if it´s in shops, restaurants or elswhere, never let you credit card leave your sight.
