| Just off the Rua do Casino, was the Algarve's first night spot, Sob e Desce,
"Up and Down", which had been registered in 1961 as the first discotheque
in Portugal. The proprietor was an Irishman, also a Jazz buff, who played the saxophone
Downstairs was reserved for dancing whilst food was served upstairs. Breakfast was served
on the terrace. During the next twenty years, many famous artists and groups appeared at
Sob e Desce, including Georgie Fame, Wideawake, Cat Stevens, Bobby Stardust, Donavan and
Ronnie Scott. Later it was renamed Whispers. Today it exists as The Jailhouse and is still
a late night live music bar open every night for most of the year. |

I lived in Carvoeiro from when I was 10 to 17, attending the International School.
Actually I lived in Salicos just a few hundred metres away from our friendly webmaster
here. I now live in Exeter, UK and study A Levels at college. I also run a software
company called Bitstream Software, visit us at http://www.eyebrowse.freeserve.co.uk.

From Lisbon airport just follow the SUL and PONTE signs and
keep driving. DON'T take the right turn to Lagos whatever you do. At Messines take the
Silves turnoff and then head to Lagoa and Carvoeiro. You will know when you have reached
Carvoeiro by the state of the locals. |

Hi, I'm Sheena Oswald, I came to the Algarve around 3 years ago for a 'Career
Break' and have stayed here ever since! I live near to Carvoeiro and own 'Casa Rustica' (a
house and 2 apartments) located in the heart of the village - great views and ideal for
holidays!
I have been painting during my time here and next week on Saturday the 20th March is the
opening of my first exhibition in the Convento de Sao Jose in Lagoa. You are welcome to
come and take a look and join us for a drink and nibbles from 6.00pm. The exhibition runs
for 3 weeks.
