I suggest the cliff top walk east from Praia da Marinha, where you will come across a tiny little cove and also up to the Barragem de Bravura which is inland from the EN 125 at Odiaxere(on the way to Lagos)It's a big lake and very peaceful. Don't touch it with a barge pole!!

It has more complaints than anywhere else. It frequently appears on "holiday from hell" TV shows. It is a monstrosity, completely out of place and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemies!! In Prince Charles words - it is a "carbuncle"!!

The beach at Praia da Rocha is one of the best. You can walk along it from the Marina to near Alvor. Plenty of space for everyone!

Whenever we're there people who are staying with Club Praia da Rocha are always complaining about it and many move elsewhere. There's always a lot of illness there as well.

Spent two weeks in Carvoeira (March 3-17) and absolutely loved every minute we were there - hated to leave. We stayed at the Monte Dourado and have nothing but good things to say about it. We were two weeks in Albufeira - glad we saved the final two weeks for the best! We are already planning on returning next year for two months. Ignore the miserable messages being sent in about Carvoeiro. We've been going at least three times a year since 1993 and never tire of the place. It's mainly uncommercialised,and it's not tacky, like some of the Algarve has become. We were there for New Year and the weather was beautiful. We have just returned from a 4 week stay with sunshine on all but 5 or 6 days. We didn't see any signs of the so called "crime wave", but I heard that the main trouble maker is at present an unwilling guest in Faro jail. My advice is to look forward to your hols in Carvoeiro, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Elaine

I totally agree with Mike Chislehurst - this site has really been rubbish lately, there has been absolutely NO constructive criticism, only criticism for the sake of it. I've never been to Carvoeiro, but will be going in the summer. I first looked at this site when I booked by holiday and was impressed. Since then I've been checking it out and maybe its the horrible winter months, but doesn't anyone have anything good to say about it. I should just say, that it certainly hasn't put me off, but I'm sure for a lot of people it will. Yes I agree about how the message board has changed. Let's get it back to what it was!

Regarding timeshare, I haven't got one but have stayed at Monte Carvoeiro several times. I can certainly vouch for the properties and site. We've always booked late and had excellent deals. We've also booked through a company that takes unlet weeks.Can't remember what they're called!! - something like Premier Leisure/First Leisure? (but it may not be!). They advertise on teletext and have good prices, sometimes giving free car hire etc.

My reason for telling you all this is ..When you book with them, during your stay, you get an invite to a free buffet meal one evening. I can honestly say that Chris (who was mentioned earlier) never tried the pushy sales line. She answered your questions if you had any and it was a purely social evening. Saved paying for a meal that night!!

If we ever did consider timeshare we would definitely consider Monte Carvoeiro and approach her first. Which reminds me - I have a free drink still waiting from last year!!

I'm over in April (but not at Monte Carvoeiro - couldn't get the dates I wanted)so I might call in for that drink!!

Is that the Tony I know from this site who's just bought property by the sound of it? If so - are you renting it out?!

would be really interested to know who the "real people" are. Those getting drunk in several places and having a problem to behave as one can expect from "civilised" people ? Donīt know where you are from and to be honest I donīt care. But "francofile" (spelling ???) in this context is quite ridiculous. Carvoeiro is a nice place to stay but people should be really careful with the limited resources that they have. I am totally amazed by the cynical and somewhat arrogant attitude of some of the contributors to this site. I am one of the 'gullible, ignorant' people who own timeshare along the Algarve. I am a solicitor who has a practice with two partners in Devon, both my partners also own timeshare in different parts of the world. The timeshare I own in Qunita Da Lago and Alvor is not 'rights of use' I hold a title deed for both. The maintenance fee I pay in Alvor is only Ģ165 a year, a small price to pay for a 2 bedroom apartment on the ocean using all the facilities of a 5 star hotel. The situation is similar down at Quinta Da Lago. Like the purchase of any product you have to do your homework and parting with your 'life savings' is not recommended. Timeshare is an investment in holidays only. The contributors of this site need to open their eyes to the world around them, over 10 million people own timeshare and companies such as Marriot, Sheraton, Hyatt, Stakis, Disney and Hilton have timeshare resorts.

I recently did loose a property - absolutely nothing to do with them though, and they have been really quite helpful in terms of advice on all aspects of the purchase process. I think that you just have to talk to the right people and ask the right questions. Timeshare, or co-ownership as it is now called (due to the terrible reputation timeshare had developed) is a bit like those mail-order lotteries where people sign up for something cheap and before they know it, their lifeīs savings have gone down the drain. The concept only works as long as there are people gullible or ignorant enough to buy into it. If someone comes up to you in the street and asks if you are interested in buying timeshare, they are breaking the law. Most likeley you will be asked to come to a tea-and-cookies-along-with-some-idle-chit-chat event. Once there you will see the real face of these people, and what they are actually selling.....And god help you if you try to bail...

There are 2 water parks near Carvoeiro, Slide and Splash at Estombar and The Big One near Porches. As far as I know you can book daytrips there from Carvoeiro and they will pick you up in a coach - ask at reception on Rocha Brava or the tourist office in Carvoeiro village (near the beach, opposite the ice cream shop). There are also car hire offices which offer day trips to Monchique, Silves etc and a travel agent in rua dos pescadores (near the chemist), I'm sure any of these will be able to help.

Hi,

I am visiting Carvoeiro for the first time and will be staying at the Rocha Brava complex for 2 weeks at the end of May. We shall have 3 young children with us aged 2-4. I was wondering if anybody could give me ideas on where would be a good place to go with kids this age, other than the beach, Zoomarine seems a good bet so far. We may only have a car for part of the time so places nearby or a bus/taxi ride away would be appreciated. Also if anybody could comment on the nightlife in Carvoeiro in May and suggest some places us adults may like to visit.

I am shocked to see the negative comments about Timeshare. I have owned the product for 18 years and like any product available there are good and bad people who sell it. Think about buying a second hand car from a garage!! I can personally recommend Pestana Hotels and Resorts who are the largest hotel chain in Portugal, they have just taken over Palm Gardens in Carvoeiro and are creating fantastic 2 bedroom townhouses on the cliff-top. The company has a great track record with timeshare on the Algarve and in Madeira. They also own the Gramacho and Pinta golf courses in the area, timeshare owners get reduced rates!! Apart from numerous cases of illegal practice that are going through court right now, most of these time share companies are acting in a way that might just barely be legal.

To Jackie asking questions about Vilas Do Mar. We stayed there last year (3 teenagers with us). They had great time as they could go off on their own and meet up later. Very near the square and beach (5 mins walk). Pool extremely cold!! The apartments are superb (my husband and I are going without teenagers for Easter!!). The teenagers soon found bars, foam party! and many places to eat to please them, Good luck - you'll enjoy it. Sue

Re Villas Do Mar These are a lovely block of ten apartments near church on headland, 300m from town sq. We have stayed there three times and now own an apartment! Located in a residential area so a little quiet for teenagers, but they are close to centre and beach. Evenings they can use several bars, Safari etc. and can then join you in the JailHouse, live music most evenings. I am sure you will have a relaxing and fun filled holiday! Tony
