Can somebody clarify this travellers cheques situation as there seems to be different stories.

I have taken sterling travellers cheques to Carvoeiro for years and NEVER had any problems changing them at various places in and around Carvoeiro!

Is the problem only with Euro TC's?

Why won't exchange bureaus take them?

IS it because they are not yet fully ready for Euro TC's, or some other reason?

If they do, is the commission or exchange rate rubbish?

Can someone clear this up for us! If this is going to be the case in the summer I can see a lot of unhappy tourists in Portugal!

RE: Travelers Cheques, just returned from 10 lovely days in Carvoeiro and yes travelers cheques are not accepted (same problem in Lisbon). We were able to cash them at the front desk of the hotel but there is a 3% (not 30%) surcharge (3 euros on a hundred). The travelers cheques were in Euros.

I'm sure the fish restaraunt is fine in Silves but to say there ia nothing fish wise in the Carvoeiro area worthy of a mention is nothing short of being naive and insulting. You must be eating the tourist menu. Try "o" Cantino for starters who supply and prepare all the main ingrediants the message enquired about. There are many more that will with 24hrs notice get any fish you so desire and prepare and cook well if it's considered a specialality. Mike,Chislehurst.

Apartam.Farol:it's o.k., right in the village.Actually, if you click on Maps, then Carvoeiro Center Map, you'll see Rua do Farol (Lighthouse Rd.), you'll find Market Place, and the apartments are situated on PLACE word, which is a main road with all the shops and restaurnats, etc. Enjoy your holiday.

Just returned from the Algarve (to sunny Cardiff) and was appalled to discover that Euro travellers checks are not universally accepted in Portugal. Even places that would exchange them were charging 30% commission. Therefore beware. Take a little cash with you and your hole in the wall card. Can anyone advise if dollar travellers cheques are subject to such rip off commission charges?
