Hello there,

I am looking for somewhere to learn Portuguese. I live in the Almancil area, and don't mind travelling to a destination or alternatively a teacher that goes to your house would be ok. Can anyone reccommend someone/somewhere?

Thanks

Susie,The Algarve is on the Atlantic and can be windy between October and say the end of March from time to time. From April through September it is unusal to get more than a breeze on the beaches and very little wind at all once you move back from the beaches. It's similar to the Med but much more fresher and far more enjoyable.

Just returned to U.K from a week in Rocha Brava. Cloudless skies all week, temps. in the 70s,stunning deserted beaches. Who could want for more. Ref. car hire, I use Carjet.com. and have found them excellent. Their rates include all insurances, and you don't have to pay up front. A full explanation is given on their website.

Visited Burgau one evening last week, inside a castle ruins a man was playing a form of bag pipes. Could someone please let me know the name of the instrument and also it's origins. Many Thanks, Dave

Re:EURO I don't think the prices have changed that much, obviously there has been a bit of rounding up because of the change, for example something that was 1000$00 is 4 euros and 99 cents so now it is 5 euros, but apart from the odd centimo nothing should have changed. After saying that there are a few people who have put their prices up lots, you have to just be careful

Houve um tempo em que em Carvoeiro as portas estavam sempre abertas, mesmo quando as pessoas saíam...

There was a time in Carvoeiro when the doors where allways open, even when the people where out...

Mesmo hoje pode ver-se como as pessoas se respeitam, para quem pensa que somos um país do terceiro mundo estão muito enganados e ainda têm de nascer 1000 vezes.

Even today you can see how people respect each other, those who think we are a third world country are completly wrong, and must born 1000.

De certeza que todos estão encantados com Portugal, e em questão de segurança estamos bem melhor que lá fora...

In security Portugal it's a much more safe than almost elsewhere...

I realy wonder to read so much about crime problems in Carvoeiro. I am coming to Carvoeiro 2-5 times a year since 22 years. I had never contact with crime. O.K. burglers can be a problem, but if you keep your door looked and dont open all windows while staying at the pool it's not problem at all. Make your property secure! I have also never seen dealers in Carvoeiro and I am going out a lot and I think that I am not totally blind.

The quad bikes at Krazy World - be also prepared to eat mouthfulls of dust! It gets in your clothing and in your crevices too!

Also the dirt track that leads to the place is hazourdous. I bottomed the car at least twice getting over the potholes!

Agree about the restaurant - take a packed lunch!

Re Krazy World.

I've been twice and it's a pretty good trip out for a few hours entertainment. It's lots of fun on the Crazy golf...it's sort of a cross between a crazy golf course and an assault course with obstacles and stuff to negotiate between holes (you can walk round them if you wish).

A couple of things to watch out for: The restaurant there is crap. Only pizza, lasagne, chips sort of food. The service is terrible, and the place is full of flies. You spend a long time waiting for your food and swatting flies away from your table in the meantime.

The quad bikes are dangerous! Although it is good fun, the safety aspect is poor. Worn out pads and helmet, sticking throttles, bad brakes and no safety rules at all! The both times we have been there someone was injured whilst we were waiting for our turn. One girl broke and cut her ankle up badly when she turned the quad over! If you have some experience on quads or motorbikes - give it a go, otherwise just enjoy watching!

The site is still developing and we noticed lots of changes since the first time we went. It's two years ago since we were there, so there may be more attractions now.

Re:Road directions from Lagoa to the Colina Village development.

From Lagoa you go on the Carvoeiro road, pass the Intermarché-supermarket (on your right), 250 meters later (and 3 curves I think) you'll get a road to the left at the neighbourhood "Poço Partido". (There's a sign for Rocha Brava there and the first house on the right after turning left is mini-mercado "Cidalia", it's got a sign..you'll see it). After 100 meters the road splits, keep right, follow the road for another 250 meters and you've got the entrance of Colina Village on your right.

Beware! The so called Lower Chequer Golf Society from Sandbach are about to decend on Carvoeiro again (arrive 21 Feb 2002 for 1 week). Watch out for false handicaps. But they are bandits on the course be particularly beware in restaurants and bars. Just watch them decide how much each has spent and who has spent what over a round of drinks or a meal. If bar and restaurant owners want fun see if you can beat them on the bill break-down.

Re Insurance

Gordon

If third party liability cover is a consideration I suggest you check carefully what Portuguese companies offer. In my experience the maximum cover is very small by UK standards - especially in our increasingly litigation conscious times. I switched to Saga in the UK. They operate a good foreign property scheme but you do have to be over 50 and I do not know how they would view an offshore holding.

Car hire and insurance.

Will be visiting in April. Pre-booked a hire car with AVIS. Was told that if I want fully-comp insurance cover (nothing to pay no matter what) then it will cost me 7euros + tax a day extra.

What will the Tax be?

If I dont have this cover then Im liable for first 750 euros of any damage.

Also, as said will be visiting in April. Staying in Colina de Lapa appartments. Any info on these? Are they good, clean, whats nearby etc..etc?

Would also like to visit in September and would consider arranging independently then. Therefore anyone out there with a 2/3 bed villa/appatment for rent during that period, reasonable priced, that I could view when over in April? Would like to be near beach.

Cheers,

Tommy.

Hi , We have rented cars from all the large car hire companies Herzt , Avis etc - the bottom line is that they are all crooks .I now pay for my rental via my American Express card ( Amex ) as this is the only company who will sort out any problems after the return of the vehicle .

The crime rate in Carvoeiro is nothing to worry about . Just be sensible ie lock your villa /car etc and your chances of being robbed are no worse than any other part of Europe .I have been burgled twice but on both occasions it was bad luck more than anything else -the cops got the little sods and locked him up ,they even invited me to the court proceedings! See you all in April - Smiler Bar -it's my round .

I have been travelling to Portugal, mostly Carvoeiro, for business and pleasure for many years and have never (touch wood) had problems with crime, although I am aware that incidents have increased over the past few years, like everywhere else in the world. I am a woman, often alone, and have stayed in houses on most of the villa developments in Carvoeiro. I have also stayed in Vilamoura, Albufeira, Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago. I still, however, feel safest in Carvoeiro. Of course, be careful about locking up when going out etc, and dont leave doors and windows open when you are out by the pool etc, but would you do this at home?

How many of you have rented cars, damaged them and told the rental people that it wasn't you?? I heard an amazing story last year, two couples went for dinner at Roma restaurante, had too much to drink so called a taxi to take them home, they left the rental car there. The next morning they took a taxi back to the restaurante and what a surprise, the dustmen with their truck or a jeep had smashed into the side of the car, oh and nobody had seen anything! Do you really expect us to believe stories like that, be honest! how many people have broken the wing mirrors on rental cars and said it wasn't them, we see it happening all the time. Yes, I agree check your cars when you pick them up, and ask about insurance and what it covers. Don't choose the cheapest rate of insurance which covers almost nothing, you could end up paying for damages which could have been covered by the insurance

You've got to get these crimes into propective:

Consider,

I live in a big city in the UK and I know the crime rate within my area is far higher than Carvoeiro. It's the scurge of modern day society and Carvoeiro like anywhere else will be unable to stop its growth, even with increased policing!

It happens everywhere: Bag snatchers on scooters in parts of Spain!

Escorts provided by restaurants back to your beach hotel in Jamaica to avoid mugging!

Carribean Con artists posing as tour guides in 4-track vehicles - drive you to the middle of nowhere and mug you!

Time share cons galore in Gran Canaria if you're not careful!

Even at home in the UK burgalars are starting to hit properties way out in the countryside because they know that the police response times are likely to be 30 minutes plus! So much for a quiet place in the country.

And many more from around the world which I am sure you have heard and read about.

It's a world problem and not isolated to Carvoeiro...the best advice has already been posted on this site - just be careful and take the same precautions you would at home.

The villa I stay at in Carvoeiro, and have done for years has a visitors book. It must be worth noting that with over 10 years of visitors comments to read, incidents of crime are only mentioned twice. And only one of these was succesful because the villa doors were left unlocked!

RE: Sorting out crime.

If it´s those little brats that run around stealing wallets from careless tourists then I feel a good spanking is in order (and I mean green and blue!).

It´s not like they are going to run to the police or their mommy howling about how they got spanked while trying to nick something.....

I didnt report & was charged £55 for a new lamp.I wonder how many times they charged for a new headlight!I got the impression that this was a nice little earner, the offending coy was Auto Jardim...watch them....MC

The end of last year I booked a family holiday to Carvoeiro, our 4th visit I also reccomended ouy friends should likewise visit. They promptly booked a villa for 2 weeks. They recently started reading information posted on this site - and suprise have cancelled their holiday for the 2 adults and 3 little ones, having undergone theft in the UK. There are many many safe resorts around the world to holiday at very competitve prices - Carvoeiro is - sorry was great for a quite very pleasant holiday for young and old alike. There is obviously a problem with crime which is festering out of control - Carvoeiro sort these idiots before its to late!

Anybody headed to the Algarve and hiring a car at Faro airport: make sure you check your car for dents and scratches and let the staff know before driving off (ask for a damage report there and then) or if you're not happy with that ask for another car. I didn't do either and a month later got a credit card bill for £225 for a dent that was already in the car when I picked it up! I foolishly thought they must have some sort of up-keep log at the airport which shows who's done what to the car and when, but no, they haven't. I didn't complain because the dent didn't hinder the performance of the vehicle and I thought since they've cleaned it and decided to hire it out again, it must be OK. I used Alamo car hire but I'm sure they're all the same. My credit card company refuses to give me refund, apparently car hire is covered by a "final clause" what ever that means so in other words they're allowed to do this! So now I'm fighting with the tour operator and it's my word against the staff's at the airport. SO CHECK THE CAR before agreeing to take it.

Re:petty theft:it is true that there has been times when this occurs. It goes up and down. Some years ago there was a higherate of break ins.Lately it has dropped, despite what people are writting about.Fortunately it has been low key and non violent.Altough Police don't seem to be able to control it but they have been able to get these young people into jail. And don't forget that they have to actually get them doing it and have the goodies with them to be able to get them to jail.So it needs a great effort and time to do this difficult job.

To the person "worried" about crime, Don't! Crime occurs so rarely in the Carvoeiro area and is normally theft from outsiders or visitors from outside Portugal which includes the rest of Europe. No knives or guns, just petty theft that the British police force quite often do not follow up! Just take the precautions you would at home.

All this talk of crime is very very worrying.I have always viewed Carvoeiro as a safe place to take one's family , young and old, on holiday. I am now beginning to doubt the wisdom of booking further breaks there. Has it always been this way but has ahigher profile due to sites such as these, or is it really escalating to an unacceptable level?

re crime the kid who "visited" us several times was not an illegal. He's a local kid living in the area. And the kids who think it's funny to throw the garden furniture in the pool and smash the terrace lights wear shirts from the International School. Talking to their parents doesn't exactly do any good either. These kids go and vandalise things just because it's considered cool.

I heard Lagoa had a Police chief who used to catch a criminal, take him across the "state line" to Armação, beat the living daylights out of him, and then tell him if he came back across to Lagoa council he would send him to hospital in several pieces.

It worked to the extent, that even long after the revolution you could still leave your doors unlocked.

The GNR should maybe go about treating the under age criminals differently as well rather than giving them a lift home.

...speaking about crime, since when does somebody steal a TV set around here?? I mean it´s not like he is going to Spain to sell it for some dosh.

I still hear elderly portuguese saying "...back before the revolution we never had to lock our doors..."

If you ask me, there are a lot of illegals running around looking to furnish their little builders hut with some stuff. So when you want to build a house in the Algarve, try asking your "empreiteiro" which country his building crew comes from. More and more cheap (and illegal) labour is flooding in from eastern Europe to cope with the onslaught of building projects due to euro 2004, highways, etc.

So if there is a crime "WAVE" then we have development to thank for that. Welcome to the 21st century.

I was sorry to hear that a person holidaying in Sesmarias had a bad experience.I hope it wouldn't put them off going again. I've been going to Sesmarias at least 3 times a year for the past 3 years and have never experienced any vandalism/burglary. I always find my stay there restful and pleasant. It's a shame when something bad happens on holiday in a particular place as it usually means one doesn't go back - a shame as it's not representative of how the really place is.

I was shocked to read you messages re the crimes taking place. We too were broken into twice whilst visiting last year and they even went through my babies nappies to look for things. In the end we had to move out as the windows took days to mend and we felt very vunerable. Please check your insurance as we were not covered for a move to a hotel under our own or the owner of the villa's insurance policy. And yes we had the shutters locked and lights on and they still broke in so they must watch for when you go out. Apart from that brilliant holiday but beware and on your guard.

Although we do have our own criminals in Carvoeiro, most of the crimes commited in the summer are people from other places e.g Lisbon, Porto, etc down here to try their luck. Please try to make sure that when you go out at night all shutters and windows are closed, nothing is left on show outside, try leaving a light on or the radio playing. As for cars DON'T leave ANYTHING on the back seat or where anyone can see it, if you don't need it leave it at home. Everywhere has crime, Carvoeiro is not an exception, if we are all a little more careful maybe we can avoid having our holidays ruined

Crime?

Day break-ins and walk-in thefts are common place. Usually cash is the object to fund drug use. Night time break-ins also often occur whilst occupants asleep in houses. Police more or less powerless but could do more to patrol and question anybody out and about in the early hours.

Perhaps the new Junta de Freguesia will try to do something to control this problem?

Big clean up needed.

Reference Sesmarias, we were told by our rent a car rep who lived in Ferragudo that car vandalism was very common in the area. His parents live in the village but were looking to move out due to the arrival of the Cosmos complex. His advice to us for the future was do not hire a Punto, this is the car the vandals love. By the way my favourite restaurant by far in the area is Oasis, the ribs are fantastic!! Not only are the owners very welcoming, the English waitress is great aswell. Highly recommend.

Sesmarias is a "villa-neighbourhood" which is part of Carvoeiro. 4-5 minutes cardistance; 15-30 minutes walkingdistance from the center. If you want to go to the center a lot, which you will, or if you want to go to the beach, you might aswell rent a car. If you only come to the center once a day for dinner and/or drinks and don't go anywhere else you better get a taxi, rather then drink & drive... From Sesmarias you have easy access to Lagoa (5 min.), Ferragudo (10 min.), Portimão (15 min.), Silves (15 min.). Times are all by car. Rent a car and buy yourself a detailed map of the Algarve because it's beautiful!
