Re: Voting for the mayor:

It´s hard to loose an election if you have no opponents. If you want some good info on lobbieing someone you should probably ask the mayor himself.

If you want another example of this kind of exploitation look at how Loule profited from tourism in Vilamoura.

RE: Residents/House owners:

There's 1 BIG problem in Lagoa... The people who are voting the mayor are the Portuguese who, mostly, are living in the village of Lagoa. Even though the council of Lagoa is probably getting 10 times more money out of taxes in Carvoeiro than in Lagoa itself. Foreign residents also have the right to vote the mayor, most of them don't even know or don't know how.

So if the people of Lagoa are happy...exactly...the mayor stays and stays and stays. So you build them a swimmingpool, a new busstation, a pedestrian area (which is empty), improve the infrastructure, etc...

The money taken out of Carvoeiro people (think of the real-estate-taxes) and Carvoeiro businesses (licenses and taxes) is put into developping Lagoa itself.

In the meantime we, in Carvoeiro, just keep waiting for normal roads, streetlights, pavements etc.

It's time the people of Carvoeiro are taken serious too!

We are being advised in the UK tabloid press that since the introduction of the euro alot of people are being ripped off by unscrupulous retailers in the UK when presented with the euro currency, even though they are openly stating it is accepted in their outlets. How has the currency change in your area of the Algarve affected prices? Are shopkeepers,Bars,Restaurants,Taxis being fair or is the situation as everyone was expecting an excuse to yet another round of pre season price hikes. Your honest replies and comments would be appreciated- Len King. Kingsmith Travel Promotions, Farnham Street Manchester

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments expressed with regard to the conditions of the roads in and around Carvoeiro. When you consider that the new road building programme in the Algarve and the new motorway under construction serving Lagoa and surrounding districts has and is being funded by 'Common Market' money you would think that the local authorities would do their share and keep the roads in reasonable repair rather than just shovelling the odd pile of tarmac from the back of a moving lorry into potholes and hope that the following traffic will compress this into an acceptable road surface. Perhaps lobbying the local Mayor into action or at least embarrassment would help. Someone submit the actual address and I'm sure a few of us will bombard him with half a ton of paperwork(or will that just be discarded along the roadside and add to the almost non existent road cleaning programme). Portugal is full of locals who love the 1st world currency injection but insist on trying to get away with 3rd world service. Sharpen up or lose out-thats what Spain had to do. Ask the mayor of Marbella.

Residents/House owners:

Are the roads infront of your house also falling to bits? Havent seen fresh tarmac in decades? And you are wondering where all the money from your taxes goes? Makes you wonder how Lagoa council can afford a new indoor pool but does not have the spare cash to pave the roads in the urbanisations around Carvoerio.

I believe their position is that whoever can afford a house in Carvoeiro can also afford to pave the road infront of it. That will not do. Carvoeiro is the largest source of revenue in the Lagoa council!

I urge everyone in this situation to start pettioning the mayor in writing to pave the roads around Carvoeiro instead of building new pools, crossings, fire departments, etc. in Lagoa.

The more, the merrier! Thank you!

Carvoeiro Sol Hotel is right in the centre of town and the best option if you want to go bar-hopping. Otherwise there is a new Hotel Mirachoro about 500 Meters from the square, but I hear they only serve breakfast. Almansor Hotel is a little further up the road and offers everything from B&B, lounges, lunches, dinners, cocktail bar, indoor - outdoor pool, etc. Check out the Hotel links on this page for more info.

Hi, I like the site, and the place sounds tempting - I'm coming to the Algarve for a week in early march, flight only booked at the moment, and I'm wondering where to stay. How does Carvoeiro compare to Lagos? I'll have a car, but is staying at the big(?) hotel the only option if you want to be able to walk to a selection of bars/restaurants in the evening? How lively will it be in March? Do I need to book ahead? Any info gratefully received, Andy from Hampshire UK

To the person looking for villa/apartment in May - I could recommend the Monte Dourado apartments in Carvoeiro. The upper level all have 2 bedrooms, lge lounge/dining area, 2 bedrooms, bathroom as well as separate shower room. All in groups of about 20 - most with own pools. We are going in May for our third year. We booked ours through Style Holidays.

A great " Thank You " to the person who left the message about the Portuguese lessons in Carvoeiro for me on this board. Also my appreciation to the person who corrected my spelling to my closing of ' ate logo '. It certainly pays to read ones own spelling before sending it. I noticed that a number of people leave messages on this board, but do not add their name at the end of their message. What are they afraid of? If people's communication are kept civil and leave rude comment out of their messages, one should not hesitate closing the notice with their name. I for one would like to thank people by their name, it makes things a bit more personal. If anybody would like to meet us ( my wife and me ) we usually have lunch at " Edra's Snack Bar " at Poco Partido. Tony the owner speaks English quite well. Here I will try again ; 'Ate o proximo mes'. Fred, from Canada.

I totally agree with the the contributor regarding people living in the Algarve who are so lacking in intelligence not to be able to be fluent in your native language after being a resident for a few years. To those of us however who travel the globe on our vacations we would have to learn so many languages, time just would not allow this luxury, so with this in mind perhaps you will forgive us for not being able to decipher your words of wisdom.

Well I've got to admit that whoever left the 'dickleggsit' message really appealed to my sense of humour! on a cold grey damp friday afternoon. I can honestly say that after being out for a few drinks over the past couple of years with my 6.00pm drinking buddies I cant even speak that well, let alone spell that well. I can certainly recognise the trade marks of some of the message writers (some more than others) Just to say on signing off that since the new laguage school has opened I hope that there will be far more of you all effluent-Sorry fluent in Portuguese and look forward to seeing you all soon

We have recently returned to the Uk following two recent trips to the Carvoiero area with the idea of purchasing a two bedroom apartment/villa for the purpose of extended 'holidays'. We have been to alot of agents and viewed alot of property between Almansil and Lagos but keep being drawn to the Vale do Milho area and in particular to the new development being built by PGM/VDM.

Can anyone please let us know if you have any dealings with this Company? Are they as good as they appear to portray? Any good comments but most of all any anyone bad experiences. They tell me that the Company is headed up by an English Director but were very tight lipped about the involvement. I must admit that we are very interested to have another look but as you will gather we are a bit cautious

Colin, I figure that the message board is for general questions/chat,etc and the guest book is for visitors to the site and carvoeiro to say how much they like or dislike. Anyway, this is the Internet (ie public domain) and people which generally put what they like (alas). I know some message and guest books are password protected (ie censored) by the webmaster. We don't want that sort of thing here so lets hope people and considerate in what they put.

You should just be able to log onto Hotmail and send/recieve e-mails as normal. Just make a note of the web address for your Hotmail home page.

There used to be three options for internet cafes. The one near the post office "Computas" bar I think it's called. The cafe at the Rocha Brava complex and the Vale de Milho golf club also used to have internet access.

This is as far as I know as about 18 months ago....there may be some more now that somebody can advise on?

Re: Beaches

All the coves between Armação and Alvor have rocks because of the cliffs that crumble into the sea every now and then. If you are looking for long, sandy (rockless) beaches you should go to Armação de Pera and head eastward along the shoreline.

Snorkeling is definatley more fun in the coves, Praia da Marinha is an absolute must for all snorklers.

Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months but keep your eye on the flags (Yellow and red flags usually mean that you should stay out of the deep end...) They also give some indication of how the current is.

Check out the beaches section of this webpage for more.

I would like to know what the sea is like to swim in off the beach at Carvoeiro :

*is it sandy all the way into the sea (or do sharp rocks lurk)?

*are there any dangerous currents?

*is it good for snorkelling?

*does a lifeguard patrol?

Please help :-)

To "you know who"

This is a tourist message board not a place to air your personal feelings regarding those of us who live here and visit here frequently(Carvoeiro that is). I know most of the people mentioned in your message and as far as I am concerned they are all stout upright pillars of the community. So please buzz off and visit someone elses message board.

Well its been just about a year since Ileft Carvoeiro to search for pastures new and more lucrative back in the uk. all I can say that its b---dy cold here and b---dy expensive as well. Gone are the days when a 6 pints of John Smiths and a 8 whiskies could cost no more than a few maintenance jobs tomorrow (How are you Andy?) The only reason to leave was that I had just landed a big bathroom and tiling job but the travelling time each day would have killed me( Is Ron still so young)But thats it Ive decided to come back with the missus of course( that shocked you didnt it- I bet you all thought that I'd done 'er in)

So when you see Mark(the misery) Mark(the pilot) Jim (the pee taker) and all the wrinklies tell them I'll see them soon

Regards

You know who

Re: Casa Hibiscus

1.What do you need it for? 2.There are at least three houses in the Carvoeiro area with that name. You´ll have to be a bit more precise.

Chuck Don't forget that Portugal now uses the Euro, not the Escudo. Most Euoropean currencies were abolished on 1st January and replaced with the Euro so you need only look at that exchange rate for travel throughout the continent. Apart from U.K. of course! Mat
